Overview
Langley School District is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Máthxwi (Matsqui), q̓ʷa:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) and SEMYOME (Semiahmoo) First Nations. The district is committed to advancing educational equity by incorporating Indigenous knowledge systems and leadership. This position supports the District's Strategic Plan, the Framework for Enhancing Student Learning (FESL) and the Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement (AEEA), to remove systemic barriers to Indigenous (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) student success.
In compliance with the recent School Amendment Act (Bill 40), the Director will support the establishment of new governance structures such as Indigenous Education Councils. They will ensure district practices meet legislative requirements while maintaining respectful relationships with the land-based Nations [Máthxwi (Matsqui), q̓ʷa:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) and SEMYOME (Semiahmoo) First Nations], the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society, the Waceya Métis Society, and urban Inuit people. The Director will oversee initiatives to create inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive learning environments for Indigenous students.
The Director of Indigenous Education will lead initiatives that incorporate Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing in alignment with the School Act, Declaration of The Rights of Indigenous People's Act, the BC Tripartite Education Agreement and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. The role involves working collaboratively with Indigenous communities, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and district leadership to support Indigenous students academically, culturally, and spiritually. The goal is to address the achievement gap for Indigenous learners, promote Indigenous culture, pride, language, and traditions, and inspire staff to create inclusive school environments. Building strong partnerships with the land-based Nations, Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society, Waceya Métis Society, and Inuit people is essential.
The Director will communicate a clear vision of Indigenous education as outlined in Local Education Agreements, the AEEA and the FESL. The role requires demonstrating cultural humility, ethical courage, and a commitment to reconciliation and systemic change.

Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with District/School Staff, Aboriginal Program, Máthxwi (Matsqui), q̓ʷa:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) and SEMYOME (Semiahmoo) First Nations, as well as other First Nation, Métis, and Inuit representation to support Indigenous students' goals outlined in the District's strategic plan and Framework for Enhancing Student Learning.
- Provide strategic leadership for Indigenous education across the district.
- Serve as a Member of the District's Strategic Education Leadership Team
- Develop and renew Local Education Agreements (LEAs) and the Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement (AEEA).
- Oversee Indigenous Education programs, including language revitalization, cultural and academic support.
- Lead data collection and equity-driven decision-making while ensuring the sovereignty of Indigenous student data.
- Ensure that Indigenous worldviews, perspectives, and knowledge systems are meaningfully reflected in curriculum, instruction, and school culture.
- Manage Indigenous Education funding, staffing, and Ministry reporting requirements.
- Support professional learning on Indigenous history, cultural safety, and anti-racism for staff.
- Monitor and report on Indigenous education initiatives, including student success data and funding accountability.
- Work closely with the Indigenous Education Council in the role of secretariat and fulfill all Ministry mandates regarding this relationship.
- Collaborate with senior leadership and the Board of Education to align district goals with Indigenous education priorities.
- Align district practices with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, UNDRIP, and BC Tripartite Education Agreement.
- Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) ancestry strongly preferred.
- Master's degree in Education or related field (or in progress).
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in Indigenous Education or related roles.
- Proven success as a school or district leader in roles like principal.
- Knowledge of cultures, traditions, and education practices specific to Máthxwi (Matsqui), q̓ʷa:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) and SEMYOME (Semiahmoo) First Nations.
- Experience working respectfully and collaboratively with First Nations Rights holders, Inuit, Métis and Urban Indigenous communities.
- Understanding of the diversity of Indigenous worldviews, histories, and contemporary realities.
- Ability to lead systemic change through an equity lens.
- Effective communication, advocacy, facilitation, conflict-resolution, and relationship-building skills.
- Advocacy for initiatives supporting Indigenous Education and services.
- Experience in leadership roles within K–12 education or Indigenous community organizations.
- Collaborative leadership and ability to build trust-based relationships.
- Experience developing policy, programming, or curriculum with an Indigenous perspective.
- Strategies to promote inclusion, diversity, and anti-racist practices in education.
- Ability to identify service delivery gaps for Indigenous learners and suggest strategies.
- Experience liaising with educational and governmental bodies to align Indigenous educational policies.
- Facilitate consultation and collaboration with diverse groups.
- Ability to provide district leadership and policy direction as part of the District's Strategic Education Leadership Team
- Competence in managing large budgets responsibly.
- Ability to analyze data through an equity-driven decision-making lens to inform support mechanisms for Indigenous students.
