Support Sḵwx̱wú7mesh children in discovering their strengths as valued members of our Úxwumixw (community). As a Special Education Assistant, you'll help nurture each child's learning journey while honoring Squamish culture, language, and ways of knowing - planting seeds for lifelong growth and cultural pride.
What You’ll Do
- Implement individualized education plans (IEPs) using culturally-responsive strategies
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for children with diverse learning needs
- Adapt classroom materials to make Squamish language/culture curriculum accessible
- Support behavior management and social skill development through trauma-informed approaches
- Assist with specialized equipment, speech therapy exercises, and daily routines
- Supervise students during class, playground, and bus transitions
- Document student progress and communicate with teachers/parents
- Participate in school team meetings and professional development
- Model wenáxws (respect) while teaching life skills and community roles
What We’re Looking For
- Special Education Assistant certificate or equivalent experience
- Training in ASD support, behavior intervention, or trauma-informed practices
- Experience working with elementary-aged children in educational settings
- Understanding of Indigenous learning styles and cultural safety principles
- Ability to lift/move children (up to 50 lbs) and assist with physical needs
- Willingness to learn basic Squamish language terms for classroom use

Salary: Compensation is based on the BC School District
Candidates are typically offered compensation between the beginning to the midpoint of the range. Weare committed to providing a fair and equitable package that reflects the value an individual brings to the organization.
