Position Summary

The Aquatics Lifeguard/Instructor is responsible for ensuring the safety of all patrons in aquatic environments and providing high-quality swimming instruction. This role involves monitoring pool activities, preventing accidents, responding to emergencies, and delivering instructional programs that promote group aqua fitness, water safety and swimming techniques. The Lifeguard/Instructor maintains a strong focus on safety, customer service, and skill development in accordance with municipal and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor aquatic facilities, ensuring the safety of all patrons through vigilant monitoring and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Provide emergency response, including first aid, water rescues, and CPR, as needed.
  • Plan, organize, and deliver swimming lessons and water safety instruction following established curriculum guidelines.
  • Ensure that all safety equipment and facilities are in good working condition, reporting hazards or maintenance needs promptly.
  • Enforce facility rules and regulations in a professional and respectful manner to ensure a safe environment.
  • Provide exceptional customer service, addressing patron inquiries and resolving concerns as needed.
  • Support special aquatic events, programs, and outreach activities as required.
  • Assist with the coordination of all recreational programs, implementation of staff training and day-to-day operations of the aquatic facility.

Position Requirements

Education & Certifications:

  • Valid certification as a National Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, or Lifesaving Instructor.
  • Valid Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED
  • Valid Aquafitness certificate from the Canadian Aquafitness Leaders Alliance, or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years recent related experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Water Safety Knowledge: Strong understanding of water safety principles, rescue techniques, and emergency response procedures.
  • Instructional Skills: Ability to effectively teach swimming techniques and water safety skills to diverse age groups and skill levels.
  • Emergency Response: Proficiency in performing first aid, CPR, and water rescues in emergency situations.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal communication skills to engage with participants, provide feedback, and enforce rules.
  • Customer Service: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to create a positive, inclusive environment for all patrons.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively as part of a team of lifeguards and instructors.
  • Attention to Detail: Vigilance in monitoring pool activities and identifying potential safety hazards.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to meet the physical demands of lifeguarding, including swimming, lifting, and performing rescues.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in indoor and outdoor aquatic environments, with exposure to varying temperatures, humidity, and pool chemicals.
  • Shift work, including weekends and holidays, will be required based on program schedules and facility needs.
  • This role involves potential exposure to varying temperatures, humidity, and pool chemicals.
  • Cognitive demands include maintaining vigilant supervision of all swimmers in the class to identify signs of distress or unsafe behavior and clearly explaining techniques and demonstrating movements in a way that suits various ages, learning styles, and abilities.
  • Physical demands include swimming, lifting, and standing for extended periods.
