About The Pathology And Laboratory Medicine Team
Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM) at Mount Sinai Hospital is recognized in Canada as a reference centre of excellence for laboratory services. Our internationally acclaimed professional and technical expertise, combined with advanced technology platforms, has made PLM a national leader in providing quality laboratory services, education, and research. We offer a wide range of diagnostic support to hospitals, medical clinics, and healthcare professionals in the Greater Toronto Area, and across Canada. The Core Lab serves our hospitals and affiliates 24/7 providing rapid response testing for timely diagnoses and treatment of our acute patients. Anatomic Pathology processes specimens and offers diagnostic and consultative services that contribute to the delivery of precision medicine. The Diagnostic Medical Genetics division includes diagnostic testing of prenatal and perinatal conditions in pregnancies and an array of molecular testing covering hereditary cancer, tumour biomarkers and polycystic kidney disease.

In This Role You Will
Operations Management
- Manage day to day activities of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine’s business unit to ensure efficient operations
- Oversee billing and invoicing of laboratory testing services, including the recovery of compensation, supplies, and reagents from contracted users
- Oversee extraction and validation of laboratory data from LIS to support billing accuracy, reporting requirements, and data integrity, in collaboration with LIS and Lab Managers. This includes using MRT or other programs for volumes and TAT for quarterly reporting to OH-CCO
- Monitor business unit workload and workflow, including the extraction of workload statistics and KPIs for reporting and the implementation of process improvements as needed
- Manage client and stakeholder communications related to billing, pricing changes, testing methodologies, and the resolution of escalations or outstanding accounts
- Develop pricing with the Lab managers for lab services and participate in the preparation of proposals for lab services
- Keep abreast with changes in technology within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Microbiology that may affect test pricing and laboratory services costs
- Manage, coach and mentor a team of employees comprised of Customer Service Coordinators, Billing staff and Data analysts
- Participate in hiring and training of staff
- Handle and maintain all laboratory services contracts and agreements, ensuring timely renewals and payments
- Oversee annual renewal of the MSH laboratory license and the preparation of reports and presentations to senior lab administration, inclusive of data validation and trend reporting
- Participate in the preparation of lab services proposals which includes responses to OH-CCO requests for proposals (RFP) and expressions of interest (EOI)
- Participate in the preparation of annual operating budgets, monitor expenses and run rates
- Participate in the development of business cases and financial analysis to support capital equipment purchases and cost-benefit evaluations
- Establish and maintain monthly performance metrics
- Implement standard work practices, instill accountability, and ensure compliance with relevant regulatory and accreditation requirements
- Develop the laboratory’s business unit’s policies and procedures, SOPs and ensure these are annually reviewed and updated
Mandatory
- Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in business, health, computer science or related field from an accredited educational institution
- 5 years supervisory experience in a laboratory or health related field
- Applicants with proven equivalent recent and related training and experience may be considered
- Proven financial experience as it relates to planning and accountability of financial resources and expenditures
- Proven knowledge of all aspects of laboratory technology in a hospital setting as it relates to the area of responsibility, including accreditation, licensing and regulatory requirements
- Demonstrated strengths in planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating technical operations
- Proficient with MS Office software programs (e.g. Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) and is familiar with generative AI
- Experience analyzing financial business performance and developing business cases to lead change within the organization
- Excellent project management skills with a proven ability to plan, organize and coordinate various activities
- Exposure to Lean principles and a continuous improvement mind-set with the ability to use these in support of improving the delivery of healthcare to patients
- Strong financial planning, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the proven ability to clearly define and articulate requirements, priorities, impacts, and solutions
