The Divisional Accountant plays a strategic role in managing the financial operations of one or more regional waste management divisions. This position ensures accurate financial reporting, supports operational performance, and maintains strong internal controls while aligning with environmental regulations and service contracts. The role acts as a financial partner to divisional leadership, driving accountability, cost efficiency, and strategic insight in a highly operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Divisional Financial Management: Lead full-cycle accounting for the division, including month-end and year-end close, journal entries, account reconciliations, and preparation of accurate and timely financial statements in compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Collaborate with divisional and operations managers to prepare annual budgets and rolling forecasts; monitor performance against key financial targets, including route profitability, tipping fees, and fuel/fleet costs.
- Operational Cost Analysis: Provide detailed financial analysis on key cost drivers (e.g., fleet maintenance, landfill costs, hauling, labour, and subcontractor expenses) to support operational efficiency and margin improvement.
- Municipal Contracts & Billing Oversight: Ensure accurate preparation and timely submission of municipal billing, contract compliance reporting, and revenue-sharing schedules in alignment with service agreements and regulatory requirements.
- Cash Flow & Treasury Support: Manage daily cash reporting, bank reconciliations, and divisional cash flow planning to ensure liquidity, particularly around payroll, fuel purchases, and third-party hauling payments.
- Internal Controls & Audit Support: Maintain strong internal controls across the division’s financial processes; support internal and external audits, ensuring compliance with environmental finance reporting standards, waste diversion credits, and sustainability metrics.
- ERP & Reporting Systems: Maintain accounting records and improve reporting processes within Microsoft Dynamics Business Central; develop custom Excel models and dashboards for fleet KPIs, landfill metrics, and diversion rates.
- Accounts Payable & Receivable Management: Oversee divisional AP/AR processes, ensuring timely invoice processing, vendor payments, and customer collections—including dispute resolution with municipalities or commercial clients.
- Financial Business Partnering: Act as a trusted financial advisor to divisional GMs and Operations Managers by delivering actionable insights, supporting investment decisions (e.g., fleet upgrades, MRF equipment), and assisting in pricing strategies for new contracts or tenders.
- Regulatory & Government Reporting: Prepare and file financial data for compliance with municipal, provincial, and federal reporting requirements (e.g., HST filings, recycling incentive programs, Statistics Canada, EPR programs).
- Process Improvement & Efficiency Projects: Lead initiatives to streamline financial processes, reduce manual reporting, improve data accuracy, and support digital transformation efforts across the division.
- Support for Strategic Projects: Provide financial leadership on projects such as acquisitions, route optimization, landfill expansions, and capital investments in waste recovery technologies or transfer stations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation or currently in the final stages of CPA certification.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with a strong focus on Excel (pivot tables, lookups, modeling) and Power BI for data visualization and analysis.
- Demonstrated expertise in accounting software systems; experience with Microsoft Dynamics Business Central, RTA Fleet Management, and Mayers' Materials Manager considered a strong asset.
- Exceptional organizational and time management abilities, with a proven track record of managing multiple priorities effectively under tight deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and interact professionally with stakeholders at all levels.
- A combination of relevant education and equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
