Our Burlington facility (Pork Slaughter) is looking for a full time, Health and Safety Specialist to join our team of almost 1000 passionate people who are #Sofinaproud. At Sofina’s largest plant, we are working hard to offer quality pork products for the Canadian market.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Health, Safety and Security, the Health and Safety Specialist is accountable for the implementation and monitoring of processes and practices to achieve a safe and healthy work environment. This includes providing occupational health and safety advice to the plant staff to facilitate compliance with Plant and Sofina H&S requirements, occupational health and safety legislation, guidelines, and standards to support plant’s health and safety program and initiatives.

Key Accountabilities

  • Partner with the Senior Health, Safety and Security Manager to provide guidance and technical support regarding specific issues relative to health & safety programs, initiatives and policies;
  • Accountable for the facilitation and monitoring of the Health & Safety Programs to eliminate the risks causing workplace incidents and injuries;
  • Accountable for the facilitation and monitoring of a safe work environment for employees, contractors, and visitors;
  • Accountable for identifying trends and areas of improvement and communicating with plant management and site JHSC;
  • Accountable for developing and delivering health & safety training requirements for the workforce;
  • Conduct audits to ensure safe plant operations, facilitating corrective actions with plant management as necessary;
  • Collect and analyze statistical data pertaining to the plant’s safety and health program. Prepare reports to support various health and safety initiatives such as JHSC;
  • Support the claims/case management requirements of facilities, as required and at the direction of the Senior Health, Safety & Security Manager responsible for understanding claims management;
  • Provide ongoing support/guidance/participation to the Joint Health & Safety Committee;
  • Participate in health & safety initiatives (such as BBSO, TBSO, Risk Prediction, risk assessment, conference calls, audits, special projects, etc.) to ensure site representation, inclusion, and consistency;
  • Influence and challenge plant management as required to help improve Health & Safety performance and results;
  • Work closely with stakeholders to ensure Sofina’s 5 dimensions for success are taken into account when addressing issues.

Requirements

  • Degree, Diploma or Certification from a recognized Occupational Health & Safety program, in the process of obtaining certification or an equivalent combination of experience and training;
  • 5 - 10 years’ experience in a similar role;
  • Knowledge of applicable Provincial/State safety legislation and regulation, Occupational Health and Safety standards is required;
  • Valid Advanced First Aid Certificate or Emergency Medical Technician Certification is required;
  • Preference designations CRSP, CHSC or CRST.
