The senior environmental coordinator is responsible, as assigned, for planning, implementing and leading core environmental programs relating to ecosystem management, including habitat protection, species at risk, monitoring programs, water quality, contaminated lands, and other environmental factors.
This role is also responsible for supporting environmental monitoring programs, supporting environmental aspects of project development and other environmental issues. Additional activities assigned to this position may include support and development of related program activities such as early issues identification, habitat stewardship, air, noise, and water quality review and management, the development of best management practices and guidelines, and support for contaminated site assessment and land management programs. Important aspects of the work include related communications with internal and external customers and port authority representation on interagency committees and project-related negotiations.
What You Do
- Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of ecosystem management and environmental programs, including environmental certification programs, and programs related to species at risk and invasive species
- Assist in the development of detailed environmental effect mitigation, management plans, and monitoring programs. Provide updates of these plans on an annual basis, using appropriate technical resources such as representatives of regulatory agencies and specialist consultants
- Provide support to the project and environmental review of activities, as required, under the VFPA’s Environment Policy, Project and Environmental Review Policy and Directive, and applicable legislation. Support and provide input on environmental review and permit reports, environmental conditions and provide environmental related advice as required.
- Support and participate in cross-functional teams and collaborate with departments on environmental matters, as required.
- Provide environmental support to port-led development projects, including for infrastructure and habitat projects
- Administer environmental monitoring programs, mitigation and compensation programs, including selecting and overseeing specialist consultants to support the mitigation programs as required. Oversee specialist consultant teams and contribute to their work as required. Monitor plan implementation and progress. Tabulate and present monitoring data and assist in the interpretation of its significance, with support from specialist consultants as appropriate. Contribute to the preparation of annual program reviews and reports.
- Provide contaminated sites support by conducting due diligence assessments for property acquisitions, new leases and lease renewals, and by interpreting reports and studies that present building materials data and geo-environmental site information, including soil, water, groundwater and sediment quality data
- Assist in discharging VFPA land management responsibilities by providing oversight to VFPA site remediation and management projects, field oversight of tenant-responsible site assessment and remediation projects, and of similar other efforts such as storage tank decommissioning/removal and excavations in areas suspected of being contaminated.
- Provide VFPA representation at meetings with environmental regulatory agencies, community, Indigenous groups, and other stakeholders and, where appropriate, assist in facilitating competing priorities to ensure VFPA interests are met.
- Carry out or assist with data collection projects including for soil, groundwater, surface water and sediment sampling, and biophysical site surveys.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of programs, initiatives, guidelines, and policies related to ecosystem and environmental management, best practices and other similar programs, both internally and to partnered external programs.
What You Bring
- Bachelor of Science degree in biology, environmental sciences, or environmental engineering or other acceptable university degree
- A minimum of three years of experience in ecosystem management, aquatics biology, environmental or construction environmental monitoring, biophysical survey science, or other directly related experience.
- Must have excellent computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office tools.
- Must be a self-motivated individual with strong interpersonal, communication, technical writing, and negotiation skills.
- This person will demonstrate good judgment, professionalism and tact with a variety of internal and external audiences, including customers, tenants, governments and Indigenous groups.
- Must enjoy working within a team environment; must handle pressure well and have strong critical thinking skills.
- Must be organized, work well independently, with an ability to manage multiple tasks and work to deadlines.

Location: Vancouver, Canada
Job type: Bargaining Unit, Full-Time, Term, Hybrid
Working environment: Normal office environment with occasional exposure to industrial waterfront and construction sites including contaminated sites and requiring personal protective equipment. Regular participation in off-site meetings with external parties and the public. Required to work off hours occasionally.
