Position Summary

The Quality Control Lead Inspector is responsible for leading field-level quality efforts and providing direction to Maintenance, Turnaround, and Construction teams across multiple disciplines including welding, mechanical, rotating equipment, electrical, and instrumentation. This role ensures all work meets applicable codes, client specifications, and CAM’s internal standards through proactive inspections, testing, and quality documentation. The Lead Inspector also coordinates all NDE activities, supports final inspections and system turnovers, and serves as a key liaison with client and third-party inspectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enforce CAM’s Quality Control Program and ensure all field personnel are working to current and approved Inspection Test Plans (ITPs).
  • Review engineering drawings, isometrics, and client specifications to ensure all work reflects the latest approved revisions.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to QC Inspectors in their assigned areas, ensuring consistency and compliance across teams.
  • Serve as primary contact for client inspectors and Authorized Inspectors (AI) during inspections and hold points.
  • Conduct receiving inspections and support assessments of vendor-supplied equipment for visible damage or defects.
  • Verify material traceability against drawings and specifications, including heat number mapping and MTR validation.
  • Confirm welder qualifications align with scope requirements and applicable procedures.
  • Monitor fabrication, erection, and installation activities to ensure specification and code compliance.
  • Oversee issuance and control of welding electrodes; ensure proper consumable oven operation and log maintenance.
  • Perform or oversee visual weld inspections; maintain accurate weld logs, NDE traceability, and weld mapping.
  • Coordinate, supervise, and verify all Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) activities including MT, PT, UT, and radiographic evaluations.
  • Ensure NDE technicians hold valid CGSB certifications and work aligns with scope-specific requirements.
  • Review and interpret radiographic results; identify repair areas as needed.
  • Coordinate and validate Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) and stress relief documentation.
  • Release systems for pressure testing; witness, document, and sign off tests while confirming instrument calibration.
  • Perform flange bolt-up inspections and verify torqueing/tensioning processes.
  • Confirm “as-built” drawings reflect all deviations and are included in turnover packages.
  • Initiate and track Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), ensuring corrective actions are implemented and documented.
  • Maintain organized, complete quality documentation for turnover to the client.
  • Provide field-level technical support on welding and quality issues.
  • Participate in final walkdowns, punch list closures, and client acceptance inspections.
  • Lead or participate in field audits on electrode storage, equipment calibration, material traceability, and workmanship.
  • When required and certified, perform MT, PT, or UT in accordance with CGSB Level I or II standards.
  • Review work packages and submit project-specific ITPs for client approval.
  • Coordinate and supervise welder performance qualification testing, including orientation and documentation.
  • Provide updates to the Site or Shop Quality Control Manager and summarize field quality control activities as needed.

Qualifications

  • Valid CWB Level 2 Welding Inspector certification (required).
  • CGSB Level I or II in MT, PT, or UT (as required by scope).
  • 5+ years of quality inspection experience in industrial maintenance, small capital projects, or turnarounds, with 1–2 years in a lead capacity (preferred).
  • Proven working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME, AWS, API).
  • Strong understanding of welding processes, material traceability, and NDE coordination.
  • Experience reviewing radiographic films and coordinating PWHT and pressure testing activities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor and influence others.
  • Certification as a Professional Engineer or equivalent technical trade/inspection experience is an asset.
  • High level of attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Ability to work under pressure while maintaining quality and safety standards.
