The salary range represents the minimum and maximum salary for the position. Employees are usually hired between the minimum and mid-point of the salary range.

The Student Association at BCIT is a leading non-profit student-led organization committed to enhancing student life through advocacy and providing student-centered, responsive and pro-active services. Considered one of the leading student associations in the province, we live our mission and are student-focused in all that we do. Students lead our organization and govern the affairs of the BCITSA. Our Board of Directors is composed of 12 elected Student Executives and Student Councilors from each of the different Schools at BCIT.

The Opportunity

The Link Writer & Editor plays a vital role in creating and developing the BCITSA Student Magazine, Link. Responsibilities encompass writing, editing content, and planning future issues while ensuring adherence to schedules. The Link Writer & Editor incorporates BCITSA’s equity, diversity, and inclusion values into their work and professional relationships


What You Will Do:


Planning and Preparations 

  • Assist in generating article ideas for each issue.
  • Participate in various editorial meetings to contribute ideas and insights.
  • Conduct research on previous issues, other student magazines, and relevant media outlets to inform content planning and development.
  • During periods of reduced content assignment volume, it is encouraged to utilize available time to generate potential article ideas for future publication.


Writing, Editing, and Proofreading

  • Conduct thorough research and write assigned articles within designated timelines.
  • Review and edit assigned articles according to schedule, ensuring accuracy and clarity.
  • Provide outlines, drafts, and updates promptly to facilitate smooth workflow.
  • Adhere to Link editorial standards, maintaining consistency and quality across all content.


Working with Freelance Contributors

  • Maintain courteous and supportive communication with freelance contributors throughout the editing process.
  • Ensure that all emails pertaining to editing and writing are kept within the magazine inbox, adhering to security protocols.
  • In the event of disagreements or challenges in the editing process, communicate promptly with the Publications Manager for resolution.


About You:

You are an organized writer who is excellent at meeting deadlines. You understand BCIT students and have ideas about what articles might appeal to them. You are comfortable writing clear and entertaining content, have experience editing in English, and enjoy meeting new people.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Pursuing or completed education in a related field.
  • Experience in writing for an audience is preferred.
  • Experience editing work other than their own is preferred.


KNOWELDGE & ABILITIES

  • Familiarity with the three stages of editing is required.
  • Proficiency in track changes systems in word processing programs is necessary, along with the ability to explain their use to peers.
  • Basic awareness of accessible language is expected.


REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a BCIT Student
  • Must have access to a computer for writing, editing, and attending virtual meetings
  • Must be able to work from Burnaby Campus as required
