THE POSITION
The Customs Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with all customs laws and regulations for SMG’s imports and exports. The successful candidate is highly skilled and well-versed in product classification. Detailed, organized, and communicative, this individual is always educated on the latest customs laws and regulations to help determine classification of goods for import/export purposes and provides effective guidance to internal and external stakeholder.

THE POSITION
The Customs Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with all customs laws and regulations for SMG’s imports and exports. The successful candidate is highly skilled and well-versed in product classification. Detailed, organized, and communicative, this individual is always educated on the latest customs laws and regulations to help determine classification of goods for import/export purposes and provides effective guidance to internal and external stakeholder.
How You Will Be Making An Impact
- Prepare, review and manage import/export documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness (USMCA, DOT, etc).
- Classify products using Harmonized Tariff Schedule codes for new products.
- Audit current product classifications to ensure accuracy.
- Ensure import/export compliance with federal and international regulatory laws.
- Monitor and provide guidance to internal teams regarding trade regulation changes and assess potential impact.
- Provide support to internal teams on customs compliance matters, including tariff classification, valuation, and duty savings opportunities.
- Review brokerage invoices for accuracy and resolve disputes.
- Assist Finance department in determining appropriate duties to be invoiced back to customers.
- Maintain detailed records to support potential audits.
- Understand and stay up to date of country-specific compliance requirements
- Zero compliance violations.
- Efficient communication with customs brokers for minimal shipment delays/holds.
- Cost optimization by reducing duties through proper classification and recovery of duties.
- Proactive risk management and communication regarding regulatory changes.
- Accurate classification of new products
- 5+ years’ experience with customs regulations and import/export procedures.
- In-depth knowledge of customs regulations, international trade agreements, and tariffs.
- Proficiency with HTS classifications.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment, an asset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
