Position Information

Are you a Registered Nurse looking to learn or enhance your critical care skills in the ICU? The Ottawa Hospital is looking to provide a special opportunity for nurses with or without critical care experience to join our in-house ICU Training Program. During the program, candidates will be afforded the opportunity to learn critical care theory and translate the knowledge into the clinical setting. This opportunity provides the advanced training needed to confidently and competently care for the most critical patients in a level 3 Intensive Care Unit.

Please note that successful candidates will commit to continued employment in the ICU for a period of 24 months.

About The Ottawa Hospital ICU

The Intensive Care Units at The Ottawa Hospital, located at the Civic and General Campus, care for complex medical and surgical patients. The ICU at the Civic campus is a 26+ bed unit and is the regional trauma, neurosurgery and vascular centre. The ICU at the General Campus is a 25+ bed unit providing tertiary acute care for complex medical, surgical and cancer care patients. Both units offer a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to ensure patient and family-centered care using evidence-informed practice. In this environment, you will care for patients with the assistance of a multidisciplinary team.

About The ICU Training Program

The training program consists of 6 weeks of in-class learning, skills, simulation, and clinical days, followed by 4 weeks of preceptored shifts prior to graduating to independent, supported practice. The leadership team (i.e., management, educator) will meet with you frequently to ensure your learning needs are met and to provide in the moment positive feedback and areas for improvement. You will develop close-knit relationships with your peers, physicians, respiratory therapists, and allied health care team members (available on the unit 24/7) ensure ample support in your in your new role.

Staff learn on a daily basis through patient rounds, and have the opportunity to participate in educational opportunities offered by our educators and physicians. Following orientation, you will have opportunities for professional development to keep abreast of best practice changes. There is also a peer support team in place that helps staff members provide emotional support and guidance to assist each other through challenging situations. The program will connect staff members with trained Peer Supporters.

Rotation/Shifts

Days, evenings and nights, including weekends, 12 hour shifts.

Basic Requirements

  • Certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario;
  • Recent adult ICU experience, or Critical Care Course in progress with minimum of 1 year med/surg experience, or Recent Level 2 experience;
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuing education and willingness to actively participate in departmental educational activities;
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of the nursing process and the ability to apply this process to the practice of Nursing;
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient teaching;
  • Demonstrates the ability to work effectively as an active member of the health care team;
  • Demonstrates a professional and respectful attitude to patients, the public and colleagues.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing;
  • Post-graduate studies;
  • CNA certification in Critical Care;
