The Cahill Group is seeking eager and dynamic candidates for a Mechanical Estimator in St. John’s, NL. This exciting opportunity will allow you to work within our dynamic Estimating team and play a vital role on various best-in-class projects across Canada in the energy, mining, manufacturing, water and wastewater, and institutional sectors. As a Mechanical Estimator, you will service our many key accounts, develop client relationships and deal with routine capital planning and expenditures.
You will learn and constantly hone the skill sets of quantifying the level of effort, establishing the execution strategy and evaluating all cost elements of a construction project as a critical function for our business. You also build and maintain strong working relationships with a diverse team of people across all areas of the construction industry including owners and owner representatives, design consultants, general contractors, specialty contractors, equipment suppliers, manufacturers’ representatives, and supply distribution companies.
Mechanical Estimators are a key member of the bid team and develop critical information for and interface with internal departments to help prepare complete bid submissions within strict deadlines, estimators participate in bid closing reviews, making critical recommendations towards the overall win strategy for the company. After the award, estimators participate in the preconstruction phase and set the project up for success by implementing the handover process to the project execution team. Our estimating team works with industry leading software including Accubid, BIM, Revit, Microsoft Suite, etc. This will be a permanent position, working Monday through Friday, with a hybrid work arrangement that includes both in-office and remote work from our corporate office.
What will you do?
- Attending site visits, reviewing and critically analyzing tender documents to understand scope.
- Preparing and submitting queries for unclear technical or commercial items to the Client for response.
- Collaborating with other disciplines to define scope boundaries, interfaces or interferences.
- Performing material and equipment takeoffs so it facilitates/is aligned with tracking requirements for job cost and schedule where applicable.
- Obtaining pricing from equipment and material vendors.
- Preparing labour estimate based on established industry norms, previous experience and historical data.
- Identifying scope to be subcontracted, soliciting pricing and comparing proposals.
- Participating in the development of the preliminary project construction schedules.
- Estimating equipment and project expenses related to the execution of the work.
- Developing staffing and labour plan to support the project execution.
- Preparing final estimate breakdowns and analyzing each section for scope, price and completeness.
- Participating in estimate reviews prior to submittal to the client.
- Participating in the development of tender submittal documents including construction methodology / execution plan.
- Participating in post-bid analyses on jobs bid and document lessons learned.
- Other duties as required.
What will you bring?
- 5+ years of relevant experience within commercial and/ or industrial construction.
- Previous estimating experience considered an asset
- Mechanical engineering degree, technology diploma or trade certification
- Knowledge of Accubid/Trimble estimating software packages or similar is an asset; training can be provided
- Must be able to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
- Ability to strategically make decisions under pressure
