Are you a seasoned planning professional passionate about shaping the future of Edmonton? As a Planner II within the Urban Planning and Economy Department, you will be instrumental in managing, analyzing, and coordinating complex land development applications. This role calls for a specialist in land development planning who can ensure sound planning principles and statutory requirements are met through a professional, collaborative, and thoughtful approach. You will also be a key mentor to junior planners on the team and lead various projects, including process improvements and consultative needs within the corporation. Your expertise will be vital in navigating politically sensitive issues and finding creative solutions for the public good.

What will you do?

  • Manage the review of complex land development applications, including rezonings, road closures, and amendments to statutory and non-statutory plans
  • Interpret relevant legislation, municipal policies, procedures, guidelines, and best practices
  • Consult with technical stakeholders to gather essential information and data
  • Negotiate with applicants to refine development proposals, ensuring compliance with plans, bylaws, and regulations
  • Ensure fair and transparent communications, consultations, and engagements with the public and other external stakeholders
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on planning matters
  • Apply your planning expertise, creativity, and problem-solving skills to analyze and resolve planning issues, making recommendations in the public interest
  • Manage multiple application files and stakeholder relationships, ensuring timely delivery of reports and bylaw packages for City Council
  • Provide leadership, advice, and consultation services on community and land use planning proposals, including public engagement and issue resolution
  • Mentor Planners and Planning Technicians
  • Act as a public resource for specific geographical areas of the city, providing interpretive and educational services on planning and land use legislation
  • Perform research, analysis, and investigations on various land use matters as needed


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban or Regional Planning or a related degree
  • Four (4) years' experience in the area of land development planning


Assets:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners or related professional associations


Skills required for success:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of urban planning and development
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational, communication (written and verbal), presentation, and project management skills
  • Knowledge of planning and development processes, the Municipal Government Act, and relevant statutory plans, policies, procedures, and bylaws
  • Proven ability to analyze complex technical information, interpret regulations, and make timely decisions
  • Proven ability to resolve sensitive problems and situations
  • High level of initiative, independence, and leadership in a time-pressured environment
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Up to 1 permanent full-time position

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week

Salary Range: $51.171 - $65.301 (Hourly); $90,150.51 - $115,044.04 (Annually)

Salary ranges are in the process of being updated in accordance with the recently ratified collective agreement between the City and CSU 52 and will be forthcoming shortly.
