Senior Operations Accountant
Salary Range: $105,000 - $110,000
Location: Vancouver, BC
As Senior Operations Accountant at Drax, you will share accounting knowledge and insights across both technical and project-based workstreams within the Pellet Operations Finance team in Canada. This also involves setting a positive example, acting as a sounding board, and mentoring junior team members. Additionally, it includes providing reporting and control expertise to support operations in Canada’s pellet sector.

As Senior Operations Accountant at Drax, you will share accounting knowledge and insights across both technical and project-based workstreams within the Pellet Operations Finance team in Canada. This also involves setting a positive example, acting as a sounding board, and mentoring junior team members. Additionally, it includes providing reporting and control expertise to support operations in Canada’s pellet sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide a range of financial accounting knowledge, insights, and analysis for Canada operations, which generate approximately $0.6 billion in annual revenue.
- Collaborate with plant managers at the operations sites to deliver support, challenge existing processes, and produce comprehensive financial reporting and analysis regarding the actual performance of our 10 pellet plant sites, all aimed at achieving overall business objectives.
- Engage in technical, ad hoc, and project work as directed by the Operations Finance Manager or the Operations Controller.
- Key stakeholders include General Managers and Plant Managers for Northern Operations, the Operations Controller, the Director of Finance and Accounting, and other members of the Canada finance team, including Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A).
You'll possess the following skills, abilities, and experience:
- Qualified accountant, preferably a CPA, with over 5 years of experience in a manufacturing or business environment, demonstrating comprehensive post-qualification expertise.
- Essential experience in financial accounting and reporting.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage and present to stakeholders both within and outside of the finance department.
- Excellent technical and financial accounting skills.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 and PowerBI is an asset.
- Ability to meet demanding deadlines and adapt quickly to changing business needs.
- Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving abilities.
- A collaborative team player who pays close attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and integrity in calculations and analyses.
- Adaptable and capable of working independently, while also able to lead by example.
- Strong communication skills that allow for adaptation of tone and style to suit various audiences.
- Oversee the completion of month-end close procedures for the Operations Finance team, ensuring accurate recording and reporting of results from our six wholly owned pellet plants and four partnerships.
- Conduct month-end analysis and perform balance sheet account reconciliations for items such as finished goods, spare parts, and other accruals.
- Ensure that financial controls are well established, understood, and adhered to across the Canadian finance team.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for plant managers, addressing their inquiries, managing or directing queries, and ensuring they meet their financial objectives.
- Support and, in some cases, take the lead in delivering robust and timely internal financial reports.
- Maintain accounting policies and procedures while monitoring relevant processes.
- Provide the finance team with expertise in technically complex areas as needed.
- Stay updated on technical matters and assess the impact of new or revised accounting pronouncements.
- Engage in ad hoc responsibilities and projects, either taking the lead or providing support as directed by the Operations Finance Manager or senior finance management.
