Purpose

Provide strategic and technical support on taxation matters related to Scotia Global Asset Management (SGAM) private asset investment products. You will assist the Senior Manager in making decisions on tax-related matters while assessing and managing risk exposure to the organization. You will ensure private asset initiatives are delivered in support of the team's business strategy and objectives while ensuring compliance with all statutory taxation requirements and internal policies and procedures.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

Private Asset Oversight

  • Ensure compliance with all federal and provincial tax laws and regulations for the private asset funds.
  • Manage compliance and reporting requirements in all tax areas for the private assets, including annual tax returns, tax provisions, income distributions, investor tax slips reconciliation/reporting, FATCA/CRS reporting, and managing all work by third-party service providers.
  • Assist in leading and managing the monthly/quarterly/mock/year-end distributions for the private asset funds.
  • Maintain a tax checklist and documentation for all investment transactions in foreign and Canadian complex investment structures for the private asset funds to comply with Canadian tax reporting obligations. Liaise with issuers of underlying private asset feeder structure to obtain required tax information.
  • Establish efficient processes for ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of any regulatory compliance and provide education to other functional groups on relevant tax matters.
  • Ensure all tax reporting in the financial statements is accurate and liaise with external financial statement auditors, as needed.
  • Conduct and review complex tax research for the private asset funds, including complex tax positions and specific corporate actions.
  • Manage and review tax assessments and tax audit matters related to the private asset funds.
  • Review all tax information and disclosures in the private asset funds' offering documents.

Product Development & Advisory

  • Assist with taxation and provide guidance to cross-functional teams within the organization pertaining to product initiatives (i.e., fund creation, and other private asset initiatives, including advising the product team and related business teams on appropriate fund structuring and working with external tax advisors to conduct tax due diligence of underlying private feeder structures (domestic & foreign).
  • Monitor changes to legislation, inform of such changes as necessary, and support the Senior Manager and Leadership Team with respect to any initiatives that may be undertaken because of these changes.

Operational Efficiency

  • Review business processes, policies, and procedures (including those of fund accounting, client reporting, and investment management) involving tax matters to ensure they are efficient and that required procedures and controls are in place.
  • Propose changes to and/or develop new tax policies and procedures, as required.

Relationship Management

  • Liaise with and contribute to building client relationships with department managers and their staff.
  • Manage external service provider relationships and projects as required.
  • Champion a high-performance environment and contribute to an inclusive work environment.

Risk Management

  • Assist the Senior Manager in making decisions on tax-related matters affecting the private asset funds while adequately assessing and managing risk exposure to the organization and clients.

Skills

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? – We’d love to work with you if you have:

  • An accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) or equivalent experience is required.
  • Canadian trust, partnership and corporate, taxation experience is required (preferably within investment fund industry).
  • Completion of Levels I, II and/or III of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) In-depth Tax Course is an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of tax issues affecting private assets.
  • Experience with various computer software applications, in particular MSOffice, TaxPrep and tax research software is required.
  • Effective people skills, initiative, and leadership abilities with the ability to coach and motivate other professionals.

Work Arrangement: Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a common occurrence. Travel may be required on an exception basis.
