Our temporary full-time Public Works Labourer 1s perform diversified manual work entailing physical effort and agility in performing semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks to ensure the City’s vast and critical infrastructure are fully operational, well-maintained and repaired.
As a Labourer 1, you could be assigned to support work with teams in:
- Ditch and canal maintenance
- Diking and Drainage infrastructure inspections, maintenance and repairs
- Construction of diking, drainage, and sewer systems
- Extreme weather event preparation and response
- General road maintenance including, but not limited to; asphalt paving, crack sealing, pressure washing, and vegetation control
- Assisting with concrete and masonry projects
- Working with and around excavation equipment, shoring and heavy trucks
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of procedures, practices and methods related to municipal operations and construction.
- Knowledge of driving techniques and rules of safe operation of equipment and vehicles.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work, as well as safe work procedures, practices, methods and materials involved in the work performed.
- Knowledge of municipal streets and traffic routes.
- Skill in the care and operation of a variety of power and hand tools, materials and equipment used in the work.
- Ability to drive in non-standard areas and to safely maneuver vehicles under non-standard driving conditions.
- Ability to plan and organize your own workload and the ability to initiate operational adjustments based on service needs.
- Ability to work with others and use common courtesy, tact and diplomacy in maintaining working relationships.
- Ability to carry out oral or written instruction, take direction from a supervisor and exercise some independent judgement and action in processing assignments.
- Ability to interact effectively and courteously with the public and project a positive image of the City at all times.
- Possess a strong mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to lift, carry and push in excess of 20 kg (45 lbs.) on a regular, repetitive basis.
- Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, supplemented by education, training, and/or experience in construction and maintenance, equipment operations, and other related activities.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia with a clean driver’s abstract.
- These opportunities can also allow individuals to use other experience and certifications, these are not required qualifications but we are interested to hear from individuals who also have:
- Experience with operating different equipment
- Other classes of Driver’s License (Class 5 being the minimum)
- Certifications in areas such as first aid, WHMIS, dangerous goods transportation, etc.
Working Conditions:
- Routine light and heavy physical effort is required to carry out duties, including regular, repetitive lifting.
- Work requires regular exposure to traffic, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes, noise, toxic chemicals, construction sites, excavations and heavy equipment.
- Work may also require exposure to minor and/or major disagreeable conditions or hazards.
- Work is performed in a wide variety of locations throughout the city.
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
