Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.The Certified Dental Assistant participates in the management of patients with medical compromise: performs related booking, chair-side and clerical duties.

Duties/Accountabilities:
1.Performs all the chair-side duties of a dental assistant and maintains infection control. Makes impressions to fabricate gel carriers; constructs and fits custom gel carriers and instructs patients on how to use. Fabricates bite blocks and gingival protectors in preparation for radiotherapy procedures. Provides home care instruction to patients.

2.Participates in management of patients with medical compromise and with possible exposure to medical risk; co ordinates booking for the dental clinic. Assists the Dentist with screening of patients and assessment of dental needs to set priorities for dental visits; schedules appointments by contacting medical and dental offices and laboratories to see if the work is complete; contacts patients and arranges appointments.

3.Applies topical chemotherapy.

4.Communicates with medical and dental staff in the Agency and in the community as necessary to adjust appointment schedules, while ensuring that patient care is not jeopardized.

5.Maintains statistical records such as procedures performed and submits summary totals.

6.Contacts potential study participants to explain requirements of approved studies and advises dentist of patients’ participation.

7.Ensures patient records are requested for patient appointments; checks patient chart and treatment plan for completeness, files treatment plans alphabetically.

8.Maintains a double entry system on content of file, logs all work; boxes and files study models, files photographs, dictation, reports, letters and laboratory reports until further follow up is required by the Dentist.

9.Orients visitors, students, residents and staff to activities of the department.

10.Maintains department procedure manual.

11.Completes requisitions and ensures an adequate supply of materials is on hand; reports malfunctions in equipment and arranges for repair of such by following established routine service procedures.

12.Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience

  • Graduation from a recognized Certified Dental Assistant program plus one year’s related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current registration with the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C.
Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work.
