Materials Engineer (1‑Year Project Term)

Location: St. John’s, NL – In‑Person

About NDITIVE

NDITIVE Technologies is developing a next‑generation, AI‑enabled multi‑gas sensing platform for industrial safety and environmental monitoring. We blend matrix‑based MEMS devices with advanced functional materials and embedded edge‑AI analytics to deliver predictive, ultra‑low‑power gas detection solutions.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Materials Engineer to lead functional‑layer development for our sensor matrix. You will identify, deposit, and characterize thin‑film and nanomaterial coatings that enable selective detection of H₂, CH₄, CO₂, etc. Your work will be central to transitioning our sensor from lab prototype to commercial‑ready hardware.

Key Responsibilities

  • Material Selection & Deposition
  • Evaluate 2D/3D nanomaterials, metal‑oxide semiconductors, and polymer films.
  • Operate sputtering, spin‑coating, and related thin‑film tools to deposit active layers on MEMS dies.
  • Characterization & Testing
  • Use SEM, Raman, XRD, AFM, and electrical test rigs to measure morphology, thickness, and gas response.
  • Collaborate with the AI team to correlate material properties with sensor output.
  • Process Optimization & Documentation
  • Develop repeatable recipes for layer uniformity and adhesion.
  • Create standard operating procedures for scale‑up fabrication.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Work alongside MEMS designers, firmware engineers, and data scientists to integrate materials into the full sensing stack.
  • Support pilot builds and environmental stress tests.

Required Qualifications

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nanotechnology, or a related discipline.
  • Hands‑on experience with thin‑film deposition (sputtering, ALD, spin‑coating) and surface‑characterization techniques.
  • Proven ability to plan, execute, and analyze materials experiments in a research or industrial setting.
  • Strong documentation, data‑analysis, and teamwork skills.

Nice‑to‑Have

  • Background in gas‑sensing materials or electrochemical sensors.
  • Familiarity with MEMS packaging or microfabrication environments (cleanroom protocols).
  • Experience integrating material‑science findings with electronics or AI‑driven systems.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to translate cutting‑edge material science into a commercial product with real‑world impact.
  • Access to state‑of‑the‑art labs and cross‑disciplinary mentorship.
  • A collaborative startup culture focused on innovation and rapid iteration.
  • Potential for contract renewal or a permanent role based on project success.
