Purpose

Contributes to Private Banking’s success through sound advice and administration of a Private Banking team’s assigned households. Delivers exceptional personal service and is responsible for the day-to-day management of retail and small business solutions, identifying opportunities that meet clients’ immediate and future financial needs, and deepening client relationships.

  • Developing a full knowledge and understanding of Bank products, services, processes and policies
  • Maintaining an acute focus on responding quickly and resourcefully to client requests, ensuring first time right, speed, and ease.
  • Providing effective backup management in the absence of the Private Banker.
  • Contribute to the onboarding and management of client relationships, providing a full range of customized financial solutions by:
  • Accompanying Private Bankers on client meetings and calls as required.
  • Understanding the client’s financial goals and preferences, analyzing their needs and recommending the appropriate solutions.
  • Providing end-to-end ownership over advice-based solutions including account opening, investments, credit cards, lines of credits and mortgages
  • Identifying opportunities to expand existing relationships and make referrals to Scotia Wealth Management partners in response to changes in the client’s needs or preferences.
  • Support the Private Banking team’s designated portfolio of less complex credits by:
  • Developing a thorough knowledge and understanding of commercial and retail credit principles
  • Participating in the thorough evaluation of the client’s borrowing needs and strategies, income sources and capacity to formulate a succinct credit proposal for adjudication
  • Exercising sound judgement and financial analysis when granting loans within authorized limits.
  • Administering Total Wealth product solutions, including Online Loans and Private Banking Overdraft Facilities.
  • Monitoring financial status and proactively identifying unfavourable trends, escalating as required.
  • Minimize The Bank’s Exposure To Risk By
  • Contributing to operational excellence and a satisfactory Branch audit.
  • Staying current on retail lending compliance, regulatory compliance, and custody requirements and changes.
  • Adhering to compliance with regulatory activities and guidance over Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Ensuring strict adherence to Bank security procedures, including retail lending policies and processes, assigned authorities and limits.
  • Escalating fraudulent activities, unusual occurrences, issues/deficiencies/trends to your direct supervisor and/or Team Lead and/or AML and/or Branch Compliance Officer (BCO) and/or Chief Compliance Officers and/or applicable Shared Services Department as appropriate.
  • Adhering to cash, custody and security procedures at all times.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions:
  • Adhere to compliance with regulatory activities and guidelines as part of the sales process, including Privacy, Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Anti-Terrorist Financing, Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), Know Your Customer (KYC), Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC), Mutual Fund Dealer Association (MFDA) rules, regulations and policies, as well as Scotia Securities Inc. (SSI) guidelines/processes and Guidelines for Business Conduct.

  • Sensitivity to client needs and privacy; ability to skillfully position enhanced due diligence to build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Ongoing development of your skills will be facilitated through the national head office team with continued business development and specialized credit knowledge facilitated through successful Private Bankers and Team Leads.

Education / Experience

  • 3-5 years Retail or Commercial banking experience.
  • University or community college degree preferred.
  • The successful completion of a course of study that will enable registration with the appropriate provincial securities commission to obtain a license to sell mutual funds.

Work environment

Work in a standard office-based environment, but there is a risk of exposure to hold-ups, extortion, etc. The position is primarily non-physical; however, limited travel may be required for client meetings. Moderate periods of concentration are required while working on laptops. There can be stress resulting from tight deadlines, delivery commitments and service/support requirements. Client demands are constant.

Pursuant to a language needs assessment conducted by Scotiabank, the successful candidate will be required to be able to communicate in English and French as they will be required to work closely with other groups from head office who operate primarily in English, and they will serve and English-speaking clientele.
