Head of Tax Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group Ltd Toronto, Ontario
Interested in joining one of Canada’s top performing asset managers? We are looking for a Head of Tax to join our Accounting Department. If you have experience advising and mitigating tax risks in a private enterprise environment, while overseeing the tax compliance for an entire organization, then this role is for you. CC&L Financial Group is motivated to expand and develop its internal tax function and is looking for a dynamic leader to elevate the organization’s tax strategy and operations. This pivotal role will oversee the full tax lifecycle, including compliance, strategic planning, and provide fund structure tax guidance across public and private market investments. The Head of Tax will drive efficiency, reduce external advisory costs, and provide strategic tax counsel to executive leadership. Our offices currently operate on a hybrid model with a combination of in-office and remote working days throughout the week and offer flexible work arrangements during peak tax reporting periods
What You Will Do
  • Tax Compliance & Strategy
    • Lead corporate and partnership tax compliance for CC&L and affiliated fund vehicles (including public market funds, alternative investment funds, private equity/infra, and corporate entities). Ensure timely filings, accurate tax provisions and translation of complex tax positions into clear guidance for internal stakeholders.
    • Assist in preparing internal memoranda and other technical documentation as required for internal reorganizations and compliance support.
  • Fund Structure & Public Market Expertise
    • Provide deep technical insight on tax matters including Canadian pooled funds, mutual fund trusts, CAD and U.S. LPs, foreign tax credits, and cross-border issues. Ensure compliance and maximize efficiency for both public and private fund structures. Work closely with Finance, Treasury, Tax, and Legal teams to ensure the proper maintenance of holding and financing structures through the administration of tax policies and guidelines.
  • External Advisor & Stakeholder Management
    • Manage relationships with external tax advisors and government auditors. Collaborate closely with internal teams (Fund Operations, Finance, Legal, Investment Teams) to align tax planning with business objectives and fund strategies.
  • Risk mitigation and monitoring
    • Proactively monitor, assess, and guide the implementation of new tax legislation (e.g., EIFEL, OECD Pillar Two), including interpreting the impact on existing structures. Support the maintenance of complex legal structures by reviewing funds flows, preparing adjusted cost base calculations, and calculating withholding tax on distributions.
What You Bring
  • Experience & Technical Skills
    • Big 4 tax background preferred with 10+ years in a mix of corporate, fund, and partnership tax
    • Expertise in partnership structures, mutual fund and pooled fund taxation, U.S. and Canadian tax rules
    • Proficient in TaxPrep software
  • Leadership & Communication
    • Proven ability to manage and develop high-performing tax teams
    • Comfortable presenting strategic tax insights to senior executives and translating complex concepts into actionable guidance
  • Personal Qualities
    • Proactive, high-energy, and decisive with a growth mindset
    • Excellent project management skills; able to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment
    • Strong and effective communications skills, both verbal and written (ability to present complex tax concepts in an easy to understand and meaningful way)
  • CPA designation combined with a Master of Taxation or completion of the CPA In-Depth Tax Course (Parts I to III).
  • At least 8+ years of progressive corporate tax experience in a Big 4 public accounting firm or equivalent industry experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing high-volume Canadian tax compliance engagements, including partnership (T5013), corporate and trust returns for complex structures.
