Under the general supervision of the Structural Maintenance and Construction Foreman, the Journeyperson Carpenter is responsible for the construction, installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of building components, structures and lock systems in facilities under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Accommodations Division.
As the Carpenter, you will:
- Install, inspect, maintain and repair building structural equipment and systems including walls, windows, doors, roofs, stairs and railings, decks, ceilings and interior trim-work in accordance with standard trade’s practices, plans or specifications, instructions and or relevant codes.
- Provide estimates for time, labour and material on structural equipment and system installation, modification and repair.
- Prioritize all work to ensure operational continuity in and beyond the immediate work section.
- Execute a preventative maintenance program that includes testing and analyzing component parts of structural systems, and predicting routine and emergency maintenance based on test results.
- Be required to supervise Trades Helpers and Laborers regarding installation of related projects including building maintenance. Assist with the coordination of work performed by contractors when required.
- Assist in the design and modification of structural building systems. Provide subject matter expertise on structural systems and communicate that knowledge to laypersons, professionals and peers.
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency situations to diagnose and resolve issues.
- Know and understand all applicable safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records/reports using prevailing department software and other means. Operate the workforce management system (Peoplesoft) and the Workorder management system (MAXIMO).
- Keep current with new construction and maintenance techniques, materials, equipment, standards and building codes.
- Maintain appropriate licenses.
- Maintain cooperative working relationship with other individuals, shops, branches, departments and agencies.
- Perform inventory checks of tools, equipment, and materials.
- Perform other duties consistent with the position.
Your education and qualifications include:
- Journeyperson Carpenter Certificate with Red Seal.
- Experience in building maintenance as a Journeyperson Carpenter.
- Knowledge and understanding of all regulations and City By-Laws as they relate to general facilities operation, including but not limited to – building\fire\health codes and pool regulations.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards, safe working methods, and the safety precautions that are applicable to the positions’ area of work is desired.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and blueprints.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools and measuring instruments required to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to produce quality finishing and / or cabinetry work.
- Ability to instruct and train junior staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written communications.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision, organize tasks efficiently, and demonstrate the ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment.
- Ability to operate a personal computer using a variety of computer systems (e.g. Word, Outlook, Excel) and maintain records in a computerized work maintenance system.

Conditions of employment:
- The successful candidate must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful candidate possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Successful completion and maintenance of a Winnipeg Police Service Level 2 Security Clearance, an in-depth background check, satisfactory to the employer will be required from the applicant(s) or successful candidate(s). This position may require a Level 3 Security Clearance from the Winnipeg Police Service.
- A Child Abuse Registry Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License. The successful applicant will be required to provide a driver’s notice in force document upon request.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Journeyperson Carpenter Certificate with Red Seal.
- Must possess a St. John’s Ambulance Emergency First Aid Certificate or equivalent; OR willingness and ability to obtain the certificate within three (3) months.
- Must complete required training in the use of specialized equipment, such as scissor lifts, fork lifts, etc. within a specified time frame and be willing to take upgrading courses as required.
