Reporting to the Supervisor, Academic Advising and Career Services, the Academic Advisor provides support to students in pursuit of their academic and career goals through one-on-one sessions and workshops. The Advisor is expected to possess extensive knowledge about academic programs, internal and external agencies, policies, procedures, and student support services within the scope of their responsibilities, as well as theories and practices of career advising and development. They must be able to independently and thoroughly interpret student needs and provide individualized, student-centered service, as well as create and facilitate outcomes-based group workshops.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with clients (students and alumni) individually to empower them to set and achieve their academic and career-related goals.
- Assess individual situations and recommend how to access appropriate programs, courses, and learning opportunities.
- Inform students of the roles and responsibilities of the advisor/student relationship.
- Create and facilitate workshops using different platforms.
- Promote and refer students to appropriate campus and community resources and services.
- Collaborate with NAIT program and service areas to facilitate positive student outcomes.
- Maintain timely and accurate advising records.
- Actively participate in departmental meetings and training activities.
- Maintain currency in advising trends, techniques, and theories through continuous professional development.
- Participate in institutional events and activities (e.g., NSO, Open House, etc.).
Skills & Abilities:
- Significant academic program knowledge to provide accurate, useful information to clients.
- Significant knowledge of NAIT academic administration policies and processes to help students with necessary steps to achieve their goals.
- Strong understanding of advising theories and approaches, specifically student-centered developmental advising.
- Significant knowledge of career development and coaching theories and practices.
- Working knowledge of conflict resolution and problem-solving strategies.
- Working knowledge of student enterprise applications (PeopleSoft, MyNAIT Portal, ServiceNow, Career Connect).
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including effective listening and emotional intelligence.
- Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work activities and work independently.
- Ability to work as a team member and build collaborative working relationships within team and across NAIT.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- 1-3 years related experience
- CCDP or other career professional designation (desired)
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).
Remuneration: $57,314.92 - $76,022.18, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Student Advisor II).
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
