The Vice President, Primary Logistics is responsible for leading Superior’s primary logistics operations across North America, including truck and rail transportation, utilizing internal resources and 3rd parties. This role ensures the safe, timely, and cost-effective movement of propane from supply points to terminals and wholesale customers. The VP will oversee internal logistics teams, manage third-party carrier relationships, and collaborate cross-functionally to optimize fleet utilization, routing, and meet service performance levels both for internal and external customers.
What you’ll do:
Strategic Leadership & Operational Oversight
- Lead the execution of propane transportation from supply points to terminals and storage locations.
- Drive a safety-oriented culture throughout the workforce and be the champion of safety.
- Ensure all logistics operations—including internal trucking and terminal operation activities—are safe, compliant, and cost-effective.
- Drive continuous improvement in logistics planning, routing, and dispatch execution.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities to expand the operational footprint to meet growing sales and customer demands.
Fleet & Resource Optimization
- Collaborate with internal teams to optimize fleet size, composition, and utilization, both for truck and rail shipments.
- Ensure appropriate levels of trucks and drivers are available to meet service demands.
- Provide strategic input on leasing, purchasing, or outsourcing decisions for truck and rail fleet assets.
- Balance internal versus external carrier usage to maximize efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Carrier & Vendor Management
- Manage senior-level relationships with third-party logistics and freight service providers.
- Negotiate and manage contracts to ensure reliable, economical transport services.
- Monitor and improve carrier performance using KPIs and data-driven tools.
- Onboard and certify new carriers in alignment with safety and compliance protocols.
Dispatch & Logistics Coordination
- Oversee dispatch centers to ensure efficient driver assignment, route planning, and real-time communication.
- Ensure dispatch teams are effectively utilizing trucking and railcar resources and adhering to optimization tool recommendations.
- Manage operational disruptions (e.g., weather, equipment failure) with agility and responsiveness and quickly escalating with carriers to drive action.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Supply, Wholesale Sales, Optimization, and HSE teams to align logistics with inventory, demand, and safety strategies.
- Support seasonal planning and supply disruption management. Ensure use of good data analysis to back decision making.
- Ensure high levels of service to both internal and external customers through collaborative logistics execution.
What you bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in logistics, transportation, or supply chain management.
- Proven ability to lead logistics operations with a focus on safety, performance, and cost efficiency, including fostering a strong safety-oriented culture.
- Strong people leadership skills with a track record of coaching high-performing teams and driving results.
- Demonstrated success in managing multi-modal logistics (truck and rail), optimizing carrier relationships, and achieving cost savings.
- Experienced in identifying growth opportunities that enhance logistics value and improve internal customer satisfaction.
- Proficient in dispatch systems, routing tools, logistics analytics, and regulatory compliance (e.g., HOS, hazmat transport).
- Strong negotiation and vendor management skills.
- Excellent communication skills for engaging internal teams, vendors, and executive leadership, with the ability to deliver persuasive messaging and foster collaboration.
