Mechanical Equipment Engineering (New Graduate)

We are looking for a New Graduate Engineer for our Peterborough, Ontario site. This is a unique role for a new graduate to join the BWXT NEC engineering team into a 3-year rotational program that would expose the successful candidate to multiple roles in our Peterborough location. This rotation program would include 3-4 (approx. 12 months each) engineering assignments including roles in Mechanical Engineering, Pressure Boundary & Analysis Engineering, Systems Engineering, Project Management, Quality or Manufacturing Engineering. These assignments would depend on the candidate's skillset, desire, and company business demands.
BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

Essential Responsibilities
Reporting to the Mechanical Equipment Engineering Manager. Responsibilities of the engineer performing this role include supporting the technical direction for the overall project and supporting technical interfacing to both internal and external customers. The Mechanical Equipment Engineering department largely focuses on the design of mechanical equipment and systems for CANDU reactors. The Mechanical Equipment Engineering group focuses on the design, development and test of mechanical equipment for automated and semi-automated fueling machines, medical isotope systems, robotic systems, and maintenance tooling for nuclear reactors and related systems. This includes but not limited to concept design, detailed design, design calculations, assessments, studies, technical document preparation and manufacturing, test, commissioning, maintenance and operational support.

The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $68,000 and $90,000 per year. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. - Provide execution of design/analysis/test/commissioning activities for complex mechanical equipment and systems throughout the entire product life cycle.
- Preparation or approval of design documentation (including technical documents, drawings and BOMs), technical specifications, development and test plans, and engineering quotations.
- 3D modelling for the purposes of conceptual design, and performing stress analysis
- Application of design for manufacturability/assembly (DFMA) techniques
- Provide technical support to CAD, Procurement, Manufacturing, Test, Quality and Commissioning and Service personnel.
- Participate in internal and external meetings, such as design reviews, preparing and presenting technical data.
- Utilize classical and modern (finite element analysis) stress calculation techniques to perform stress analysis for components, piping systems, supports, and vessels.
- Maintain working knowledge of the nuclear codes and standards applicable to the Canadian Nuclear environment.
- Key success factors are engineering and product excellence, effective design activity management, task/milestone completion on-time/on-budget, producing defect free designs, meeting your metrics, motivating a diverse team, managing and achieving results through influencing and setting of expectations/actions.
- Leading by example, assure compliance and adherence to processes (including internal Business Management System), industry codes and standards, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements.
- Support process change through process enhancement, and technology introduction to achieve world-class product development and product deployment.
- Support customer relationships and ensure market alignment. This position requires interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross functional internal teams.
- May support proposal development and review including scope review, estimating as well as technical presentations to the customer.
- Learn to identify project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to the leadership team.
- Provide assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.
- New graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in either Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Aerospace with exemplary academic achievement.
- Co-op or internship experience in design engineering in Nuclear, Aerospace, Mining, Oil and Gas, or other highly regulated and process based design.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, understandable by a diverse audience.
- Competence in design and design processes.
- Creative problem-solving skills, outstanding analytical abilities, developing leadership skills and the ability to work in a team.
- Flexibility to work remotely on short-term customer site assignment.
