Our CKC Department is looking for a dedicated Lifeguard I to join the team.
Position Responsibilities
The Lifeguard I role involves monitoring the safety of patrons, preventing harm or injury to both staff and the public, and providing instruction for swim lessons and introductory lifeguard programs. The position emphasizes ensuring the well-being of patrons through education and training. Responsibilities include performing in-water rescues and providing medical support when needed. Lifeguard I also plays a key role in maintaining efficient, safe operations, adhering to aquatic procedures, and ensuring a clean work environment. Additionally, Lifeguard I staff may serve as mentors to other staff, offering guidance on on-deck shift operations and customer service.
The standard workweek consists of an average of 35-40 hours, with the specific schedule being determined by the immediate supervisor.
Compensation
Starting Salary $27.66 per hour as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.

- Warns swimmers of unsafe activities and enforces pool regulations.
- Administers first aid, performs rescues, and provides CPR or artificial respiration as needed.
- Teaches swimming techniques, strokes, and water safety.
- Helps improve skills of more experienced swimmers.
- Assesses swimmer progress and adjusts teaching programs.
- Provides exceptional customer service support
- Possession of Current: Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Award (NL), and Government of Alberta workplace approved Intermediate First Aid & CPR-C
- Possession of Current, or the ability to obtain, within 6 months: Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor
- The ability to focus with full attention for long periods of time and be fit to respond to emergencies at any moment
- Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques for water safety, lifesaving activities and first aid
- Knowledge of technical aspects of operating an aquatic facility
- Knowledge of public and occupational health guidelines related to the operation of an aquatic facility
- Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent communication, customer service, organization, time management and prioritization skills required
- Leadership Experience
- Basic computer knowledge
- Skills and knowledge to complete fitness skills assessment as outlined in the National Lifesaving award guide
- Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Grande Prairie
- Ability to work shift work, including Evening and weekend availability is required
- All certifications must be kept current according to the certification organization standards
