The Engineering Intern will work in a cross-disciplinary team with the goal of driving innovation in the optimization of an automated bioreactor system related to the manufacture and use of therapeutic cells. The engineering student will be responsible for hands-on support and technical tasks related to the development of innovative cell manufacturing products. This team member will be encouraged to assist in the design and development process and support processes for a complex electromechanical instrument and its accessories. This Engineering intern will be accountable for supporting more senior engineering team members’ design work, performing hands-on prototyping and laboratory work, collaborating with cross-departmental groups including biologists and manufacturing technologists, and achieving key goals according to a schedule.

This opportunity is to join the Personalized Medicine team, based in Lonza Kingston, ON CA for a 12 –16-month internship. The project involves the design of new product features to enhance the Cocoon platform, which is specifically developed to automate the production of cell-based therapies for clinical applications. Key Responsibilities

  • Work with a multidisciplinary team to delivery on R&D projects
  • Analyze processes for improvement
  • Independently design and implement experiments including data analysis, communication of results and proposals for next steps
  • Align with Quality system requirements and documentation
  • Complete tests and documentation required to qualify and launch a new product for cell culture manufacturing
  • Maintain accurate and up to date records, including appropriate lab notebook recordings
  • Capable of achieving deliverables in a timely fashion
  • Writing and revising technical documents including lab protocols and reports
  • Quickly learns new biological techniques, including flow cytometry
  • Work within a self-directed team environment
  • Present results to direct supervisor and members of the team
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Key Requirements

  • Must have completed 2nd year of a 4-year program as an engineering student, with mechanical or biomedical-related focus; 3rd year Engineering student, preferred
  • Experience with cell culture and sterile technique (preferred)
  • Strong interest in the field of biomedicine required
  • Must have some technical report writing experience
  • Must have good computer skills with MS office
  • CAD experience required; SolidWorks, preferred
  • Data analysis, presentation and communication skills required
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills; independent work skills; strong work ethic
  • Must be able to work in a team setting
