REWARDING CAREERS ARE BUILT HERE
At the Safety Codes Council ("the Council"), our passion is making Alberta a safe place to live, work, and play. As a self-funded, independent regulatory organization, we provide oversight of technical disciplines and Alberta's safety codes system through education, guidance, support, and collaboration with industry professionals and partners.
What sets us apart isn’t just what we do—it’s how we do it. Our people are at the core of our organization, and we’ve built a culture that makes work both meaningful and rewarding. We’re dedicated to supporting your career growth and overall well-being, providing the tools and opportunities you need to succeed, develop, and thrive—both professionally and personally.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The Council’s Certification, Education and Training team delivers training and continuing education to Alberta’s safety codes officers, permit issuers, municipal and agency staff, and other system stakeholders. We are adaptive, mission-driven professionals who take pride in knowing that what we build has real impact, and our culture values integrity, continuous learning, and thoughtful challenge.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a Learning Experience Designer (LXD) who can design and develop technical learning experiences that are engaging, evidence-based, and on message. If you excel at designing clear and engaging content, enjoy collaborating with colleagues and experts, and understand that technical education is not just about accuracy, this role may be for you.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the Design of Learning Ecosystems and Frameworks: Support curriculum alignment with strategic goals, regulatory frameworks, accessibility standards, and evaluation metrics.
- Implement Learner-Centred Instructional Design: Collaborate with experts and system stakeholders. Incorporate SME input and strategic goals into learning strategies, instructional design plans, course outlines, and storyboards.
- Support Course Creation and Development: Execute learning strategies, instructional design plans, and course outlines by creating scripts, activities, assessments and other content for online workshops, e-learning courses, and more. Apply accessibility and UX principles via prototype, test, and refine cycles.
- Support Quality Assurance: Collaborate with peers, experts, and other SMEs to review learning products for clarity, accessibility, technical accuracy, and pedagogical strength.
WHAT YOU BRING
To be successful in this role, we recommend a post-secondary degree in adult education, instructional design, curriculum development, or a related field, as well as 3+ years of experience in instructional design and development. That said, we are most interested in how well you can think, build, and adapt, so candidates who believe their education and experience are equivalent are expressly invited to apply.
Specifically, we are looking for someone who:
- Has a track record of designing and building well-structured eLearning courses.
- Can tell a good story – and makes sure it’s on message.
- Could talk for hours about innovation, but enjoys executing even more.
- Is passionate about instructional design, but knows there’s more than one way to do it well.
- Values our adult learners’ time and can explain their instructional choices.
- Understands how to leverage AI, but knows human judgment and creativity is irreplaceable.
- Knows that plans are necessary, but that iteration is the path to excellence.
Our ideal candidate also brings:
- Proficiency in the Articulate 360 suite, including Rise 360 and Storyline 360 (or equivalent).
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or video production tools.
- Experience collaborating with technical SMEs.
- Experience working in regulated environments or technical industries.
WHY JOIN US?
You’ll be joining a purpose-driven organization where your work will have tangible impact on public safety and professional development across Alberta. We offer a culture of mutual respect, professional growth, and serious dedication to our mission.
- Competitive salary: $78,000 – 102,000, based on experience and qualifications.
- Hybrid work model: In-office collaboration Wednesdays and Thursdays, with monthly remote work stipends.
- 100% employer-paid health and dental premiums.
- Health and lifestyle spending account.
- Generous vacation and personal days.
- Employer-matched retirement savings plan.
- Financial support for professional development and continuous learning.
