Role and Objectives: The Sawmill Operator, under the direction of Sawmill Team Lead, is responsible for executing all sawmill specific production activities. As a part of the sawmill team, the Sawmill Operator will operate various equipment such as the Trimmer, Edger and Stacker . Operators must demonstrate strong safety awareness, initiative, work ethic and reliability. Responsibilities: Ensuring the area is safe and secure before running equipment. Assist in developing Safe Work Procedures and Standard Operating Procedures. Understanding quality demands, recognizing issues, and reporting them to the QA Tech, Maintenance Person and/or Supervisor, as applicable to the situation. Maintaining clean and organized working area –catwalks, chop-saw station, etc. (examples include storing tools properly, cleaning up personal items between shifts like drink and food containers.) Communicating with upstream & downstream internal stakeholders, such as Log Yard, Forklift, Planer and KMT. Monitor movement of mill flow through the line(s), display monitors, to ensure smooth, efficient, jam-free operations. Strong ability to problem-solve and trouble shoot Ability to work well unsupervised Understand and comply with all company policies and procedures. Other duties as requested or required. Requirements: (1) year of experience in a production environment, with preference to those who have worked in a sawmill environment. Wood species knowledge, an asset. Lumber product, species and grade knowledge, an asset. High degree of self-motivation and initiative. Continuous improvement focus, with an emphasis on production, quality and safety Receptive to change – can adapt to changing circumstances. Working Conditions: Ability to crouch, stoop, crawl and climb when dealing with jam-ups or other production related issues. Ability to operate in standing and/or in a seated position for periods extended periods of time. Ability to communicate on/off radio. Hand and finger dexterity required for operating machinery consoles and directing material flow. Occasional ability to operate a chainsaw and remove heavy chunks of log/debris. Occasional ability to lift and manipulate objects of up to 75 lbs. for 5m at a time. Occasional ability to safely use hand and power tools. Exposure to industrial noise, and dust generated through processing of logs and lumber. Use of Personal Protective Equipment for the manufacturing site, as well as PPE specific to tasks being completed. Compensation Package: Starting at $28.50/hour. After completing base skills training, the rate increases to $32.50/hour, with further career progression opportunities up to $37.00/hour. Schedule: Days/afternoons and occasional shift flexibility requirements to meet operation objectives. Days: 6:30am – 3:00pm.
