The Faculty of Education is looking for a graduate research assistant to help with a project which explores expressions of joy in educational leadership. This research explores the ways in which school principals experience and find joy in their work. It addresses increasing concerns surrounding work intensification amongst school principals. It seeks to highlight the joys which emerge within the work of principalship, a concept which has not been explored within principal work. This research project will be conducted in PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and BC. Remote participation in this project is expected

The primary activities of the successful candidate will involve promoting the research project amongst school leadership organizations and school boards. You will be asked to interact with potential participants and provide information about the project and respond to any queries they might have. In the Fall and winter, you will also be managing informed consent procedures and conducting interviews alongside the principal investigator, Dr. Ken MacKinnon. In the spring you will begin data analysis and begin to work on knowledge mobilization projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Weekly meetings with supervisor to discuss progress
  • Contacting school leadership organizations and school board personnel to promote the project and recruit participants
  • Manage social media posts to recruit participants
  • Interact with potential participants and manage informed consent processes
  • Conduct interviews alongside the PI
  • Data analysis
  • Knowledge mobilization projects
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be a current Graduate student at UPEI
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely in English for academic purposes and adjust writing based on mentoring and editing from supervisor
  • Attention to detail in research and writing
  • Organizational skills
  • Creative problem solver
  • Superior oral communication skills
  • Interest in educational leadership
  • Actively studying educational leadership as it pertains to the work of principals and vice principals in Canada
  • A well-informed understanding and engagement in issues of equity and educational leadership is an asset
  • Experience working in the K through 12 public education system is an asset
NOTE: candidate may be asked to provide writing sample to demonstrate fulfillment of some of the above criteria

This position is covered by a Collective Agreement between the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the University of Prince Edward Island. Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students.
