Business Development Manager – West Coast

WJ Groundwater Canada

Date: 9 hours ago
City: Surrey, BC
Contract type: Full time
Introduction & Key Role Objectives

WJ Groundwater is a global leader in construction dewatering and groundwater management, with established operations in the UK, Canada, the Middle East, Poland, and the Philippines. While traditionally known for our technical excellence in dewatering, WJ is evolving to become an end-to-end water management partner for the construction industry, with growing service lines in water treatment and bypass pumping. Our competitive advantage lies in our deep engineering expertise, allowing us to offer clients turnkey, guaranteed-price solutions as a genuine project partner.

Following the award of several large contracts in Vancouver, we are seeking a foundational team member to build our long-term presence on Canada’s West Coast. The primary function of this position is to establish and grow our market presence by communicating our unique value proposition to key clients. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in demonstrating how our integrated, engineered solutions can, in partnership, de-risk projects and unlock new construction methods.

This role reports to the Chief Strategy Officer of the Canadian operations. As our regional business grows, this role offers a unique opportunity to evolve, potentially transitioning towards a hybrid operational and project management function while maintaining ownership over key client relationships. We are hiring a builder who wants to grow with us.

Reports to: Chief Strategy and Corporate Development Officer

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Business Development:
    • Promote WJ’s full suite of services (dewatering, water treatment, bypass) across BC and Canada’s West Coast.
    • Build new business relationships and follow up on potential business opportunities.
    • Act as the key client partner, understanding their project challenges and introducing WJ’s integrated services as a comprehensive solution.
    • Support networking efforts with existing and prospective clients to enhance their awareness of WJ’s capabilities. Initially, senior management expects ~1 week of blocked capabilities pitches monthly for them to fly out to and attend in the Lower Mainland.
    • Research on organizations and individuals to identify new leads and potential markets.
    • Contact potential clients via phone, email, and in-person meetings to establish rapport and present WJ’s value proposition.
    • Attend meetings, conferences, and industry events as a representative of WJ Groundwater.
    • Maintain accurate records of business development activity, including regular reporting.
  • Sales & Marketing:
    • Contribute to the development and execution of regional sales and marketing strategy.
    • Prepare and deliver compelling sales presentations for client meetings.
    • Work with the team to support customer retention and facilitate post-tender follow-up activities to win projects and assess lost projects.
  • Operations and Project Transition:
    • Contribute to project planning and operational kick-off meetings to ensure a smooth transition from the sales process to successful project execution.
    • Liaise between clients and the technical/operations team during the initial phases of project delivery.
The above is not exhaustive and you will be expected to undertake any other duties that may reasonably fall within the level of responsibility and competence.

Qualifications And Experience

  • A degree or graduate diploma/certificate in Marketing, Business Administration or a similar field of study. Candidates with a technical background interested in Business Development will also be considered.
  • Proven experience in a technical sale, project management, or business development role within the civil construction, industrial, or water management sectors. Direct experience in dewatering, water treatment, or bypass pumping is highly advantageous.
  • A strong technical aptitude and a keen, demonstrable interest in learning the engineering principles behind groundwater management is essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build strong and trusted relationships with technical and commercial decision-makers
  • Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm to grow with the company, with a willingness to take on hands-on operational responsibilities as the regional business matures.
  • Proactive, resourceful, and capable of working independently to build a market from the ground up.
  • Familiarity with CRM software (e.g., Zoho), LinkedIn Sales Navigator, and MS Office is beneficial. General computer skills are essential.
  • A valid driver’s licence and, preferably, access to a vehicle.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

This position is primarily a work-from-home role. If an office is established in Vancouver, the role will be based out of that office. Travel is expected for this role to visit and meet clients or attend industry events and conferences.

Standard working hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday. Occasional flexibility in working hours may be required.
