Manages all occupational health and safety activities within a large plant or for a group of smaller facilities within a geographic region. Ensures compliance with all local and federal regulations covering employee health and safety. Leads teams of professionals who are responsible for implementing health and safety programs.

Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Implement and ensure compliance with local, provincial, federal, and corporate regulations and/or policies.
  • Provide shop management and leadership with meaningful leading and lagging safety data including scorecard data, trend insights, and statistical analysis on an ongoing weekly, monthly, quarterly basis.
  • Review workplace injury and illness reports.
  • Provide guidance to Shops on incident root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Inspect and audit Shops for environmental regulatory compliance.
  • Analyzes safety trends and develops corrective / preventative actions.
  • Acts as a SHE subject matter expert related to engineering and innovation projects.
  • Performs onsite industrial hygiene assessments including particulate, gas, and ventilation issues.
  • Audit and inspect railcar cleaning processes for safety, health, and environmental compliance.

Skills/Specifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and data gathering skills.
  • Basic knowledge of industrial hygiene standards and sampling equipment.
  • Expert knowledge of both CSA, Provincial, & OSHA General Industry Standards.
  • Detail orientated with the ability to multi-task and manage time effectively.
  • Proficient in spreadsheets, databases, MS Office and financial software applications.
  • Ability to sit at a computer for an extended period.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Climb ladders to heights of approximately 14 feet high, bend, stoop, stretch, lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. to set up tables and to attach to tank cars.
  • Willingness and ability to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hats, ear plugs, and respirators.
  • Have keen visual and audio acuity to recognize various shop danger warning signals to avoid injuries and promote a safe working environment.
  • Ability to travel up to 30%.

The incumbent works to always meet internal and external customer expectations by fully applying oneself to the task involved, preventing errors, and developing and implementing personal quality improvement projects.

Education/Experience/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial hygiene or related field required and/or, Certificate, diploma, or degree in occupational health and safety.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of related work experience in heavy manufacturing, chemical processing, or foundry environment.
  • Experience dealing with regulatory agencies and auditors.
  • Experience leading / participating with short- and long-term projects.
