OLDER ADULT ADVOCATE
City and County of Peterborough
1 YEAR CONTRACT – 14 HOURS PER WEEK
WHO YOU ARE
You are an individual with a strong understanding of the various forms of abuse older adults may experience and are committed to the protection of older adults in our community. You possess the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to assess situations and develop intervention plans to protect older adults. You excel in building strong partnerships and fostering collaboration with external parties, such as legal and health services, to develop a comprehensive approach to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of an older adult experiencing any form of abuse. You understand how cognitive impairment can increase vulnerability for abuse. In addition, you are proactive in community engagement and are comfortable facilitating workshops and presentations.
What you will be doing:
- Assess situations involving allegations of abuse of older adults.
- Assist in the development of safety plans and interventions.
- Collaborate with other community agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of the older adult.
- Support clients in working with law enforcement, legal, community, and health services.
- Conduct visits with the client at the most suitable location to evaluate the situation, which may include the client's home.
- Accurately document all interactions and maintain confidential information for potential legal proceedings.
- Provide crisis intervention and support for conflict resolution.
- Participate in outreach education with partner agencies on occasion.
- Participate in the Peterborough Senior’s Safety Round Table.
- Perform administration tasks and maintain case files.
What you bring to the table:
- Diploma or equivalent experience in law enforcement, justice, or legal services
- 3-5 years experience with situations involving domestic violence and/or abuse of older adults
- Knowledge of the potential vulnerabilities of older adults and all forms of abuse
- Effective communication skills, including interviewing techniques
- Demonstrated understanding of the law, and use of power of attorneys
- Experience with documentation and record keeping
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Knowledge of resources available for older adults in Peterborough County
- Ability to work in a way that advocates respect for diversity and inclusiveness and respects the individuals’ right to make decisions
- A Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check, a valid driver’s license, and access to a motor vehicle are required
