The Crossing Guard is responsible for ensuring the safety of pedestrians, particularly school children, by assisting them in safely crossing roadways at designated locations. This position involves directing traffic, communicating with pedestrians and drivers, and fostering a safe and orderly crossing environment by ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.

This position involves directing traffic, communicating with pedestrians and drivers, and fostering a safe and orderly crossing environment by ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist pedestrians, specifically school children, in crossing designated intersections following municipal policies and traffic laws.
- Monitor and assess traffic flow to determine the safest opportunities for pedestrians to cross.
- Communicate and use hand signals, stop paddles, and other safety measures to direct both pedestrians and motorists.
- Maintain a strong, visible presence at the assigned crossing location to promote pedestrian safety.
- Report any traffic violations, hazards, or incidents to the appropriate municipal authorities.
- Provide guidance to children and community members on safe road-crossing practices.
- Ensure punctuality and adherence to the assigned schedule, regardless of weather conditions.
- Participate in training sessions and follow municipal protocols for safety and emergency procedures.
- Support municipal school safety programs by assisting with pedestrian safety awareness initiatives.

Education & Certifications:
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification
- Prior experience in a crossing guard, traffic control, or public safety.
- Traffic Knowledge: Strong knowledge of traffic laws, pedestrian safety regulations, and municipal policies.
- Situational Awareness: Strong ability to identify potential hazards and respond proactively and to assess traffic patterns and pedestrian movement for safe crossings.
- Communication: Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with pedestrians, drivers, and community members.
- Decision-Making: Ability to make quick, sound decisions in high-traffic situations.
- Physical Stamina: Capable to stand for extended periods and work in all weather conditions.
- Work is performed outdoor in all weather conditions.
- This role works a split shift to accommodate start and end times for schools.
- This role involves potential exposure to traffic fumes and noise from busy roadways.
- Cognitive demands include maintaining constant awareness of surroundings (vehicles, pedestrians, weather, traffic flow) to detect and respond to potential hazards and monitoring driver behavior and pedestrian actions to anticipate risks.
- Physical demands include standing for extended periods and using handheld stop signs or traffic control devices.
- Successful reference check (two work-related references, with a minimum of one being a direct supervisor)
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
