Purpose
The Senior Tax Specialist reports to Senior Manager, Tax.
The role is responsible for the preparation and review of Canadian personal, corporate and trust tax returns, ensuring compliance with Canadian tax laws and regulations. There will be some related financial reporting, tax planning, personal financial planning, and wealth management functions. Accuracy and integrity of data is paramount and must be performed in a highly confidential manner.
We are a small office, and it is expected that all team members will have flexibility in taking on ad hoc duties and responsibilities.

Key Areas of Accountability
Tax Compliance
- Preparation of T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 returns
- Prepare working papers and supporting documentation for all tax filings, using Caseware.
- Ensure compliance with payroll and WCB/WSIB/EHT/ GST / PST remittances and payments
- Coordinate personal and corporate tax instalments
- Work with and provide information to external accountants for US tax compliance requirements.
- Managing municipal and provincial information returns (vacancy and empty homes tax; speculation tax; property tax assessments etc.)
- Experience completing section 85 elections and capital dividend elections would be considered an asset
- Assist Senior Manager, Tax in tax planning and research to optimize tax positions for the shareholders and their various entities
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal and provincial tax legislation and communicate relevant changes to stakeholders
- Assist with CRA audits, reviews, and correspondence, ensuring timely and accurate responses
- Understand and facilitate tax compliance processes; propose and develop procedures to improve efficiency
- Identify tax-saving opportunities and provide recommendations to management and shareholders.
- Ability to work independently and within a team on complex analyses and projects.
- Various ad-hoc reports.
- Support the department’s Senior Manager, Tax with various financial and taxation analyses and reporting.
- Seeks operational and administrative efficiencies without compromising quality and confidentiality.
- As part of a small financial team, there is an expectation to take on new and unanticipated tasks as the business requires.
Education/Certifications/Knowledge
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field
- Possesses a CPA designation, and graduation or enrollment in the CPA’s in-depth tax program would be an asset
- Minimum 2+ years in a similar function; or 5+ years in a progressive accounting role
- Experience working for a public accounting firm or with a company with many legal entities (15+) is considered an asset
- Proven experience as a tax accountant or other similar position
- Solid understanding of Canadian tax laws and CRA filing requirements for private enterprises and individuals. Experience with Trust returns would be an asset
- Strong analytical skills, a proactive approach to tax planning, and a commitment to delivering accurate and timely filings.
- Strong communicator – written and verbal
- Effective problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, and Word), QuickBooks and Taxprep
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Confidentiality and applying appropriate discretion is a requirement
- Strong sense of professionalism and demonstrates good judgement, especially pertaining to confidential matters
- Must be able to follow instruction and work collaboratively and independently
- Organized, possesses attention to detail and accountable
- Proactive and adaptable
- Hybrid role working 3 days from office.
- The base salary offered for this role is $85,000 to $95,000 per annum and can vary based on job-related expertise, qualifications, experience and internal equity.
