Basic Requirements

  • Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario;
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing;
  • Masters preparation in nursing or Master's degree in a related discipline with an undergraduate degree in nursing;
  • Member of the RNAO;
  • Current BCLS;
  • Experience with oncology and non-oncology patients with complex palliative care needs;
  • Ability to accurately triage and prioritize patient consultations;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of patient navigation in both inpatient and outpatient settings, specifically related to complex palliative care needs, which includes decision-making skills and patient assessment skills;
  • Minimum of six (6) years recent experience in oncology and /or palliative care;
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in a specialized palliative care clinical role, which includes specialized consultation, in both inpatient and outpatient settings;
  • Demonstrated experience and ability related to program development;
  • Demonstrated experience and ability providing individual and group education (to patients, families, health professionals, organizations);
  • Knowledge of the consultation process as it relates to individuals, groups and/or systems;
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, utilize and participate in research and quality improvement initiatives;
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, problem solving and decision making skills;
  • Effective time management skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to competing priorities;
  • Demonstrated leadership ability;
  • Demonstrated expert communication skills, both verbally and in writing;
  • Knowledge of computer software, for example MS Office and ability to complete an electronic consult;
  • Knowledge of relevant clinical and professional practice standards and guidelines;
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of Learning Essentials Approaches to Palliative Care (LEAP) training;
  • Canadian Certification in Hospice Palliative Care Nursing (CHPCN(C));
  • Canadian Certification in Oncology Nursing (CON(C));
  • Proficiency in English and French - oral expression (advanced level) and comprehension (advanced level).
