Mechanical Engineer

MatchBox Consulting is on the hunt for a senior level Mechanical Engineer to work out of Burnaby, BC in a hybrid work model. This candidate will support an increasing workload in capital projects, OMA work programs, and Owners Engineer review assignments. The successful candidates will specialize in hydroelectric generation systems and provide professional engineering services within the Generation Mechanical group.

Duration: 2 years with high potential of renewal

Key Responsibilities

• Provide engineering services for mechanical projects within the Generation Mechanical group.
• Prepare and deliver signed/sealed engineering documentation (evaluations, reports, specifications, calculations, hazard logs, test plans, commissioning documents).
• Develop and review mechanical system designs, upgrades, and solutions for hydroelectric stations, including:
• Hydraulic turbines and generators (Pelton, Francis, Kaplan)
• Governor systems
• Gates – intake, draft tube, maintenance
• Penstock inlet valves and turbine inlet valves
• Cranes, hoists, and lifting devices
• Balance of plant piping systems, compressed air, fire protection, HVAC, oil-water separators

Act as Owner’s Engineer to manage relationships with contractors, consultants, and manufacturers.

Provide technical assistance and construction support in the field, including field reviews.

Review work prepared by project teams, consultants, and contractors to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with standards.

Lead and mentor junior engineers, technologists, and support staff.

Must-Have Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years of experience in a relevant engineering field.
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.), with Permit to Practice in BC (sole practitioner or firm).
• Project experience involving multiple stakeholders.
• Expertise in turbines, generators, and/or governor systems.
• Strong background in mechanical system design for hydroelectric generation.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license in good standing.
• Willingness to travel across BC as needed (approx. 2–3 times/year).

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

• Experience working in large utility or similar organizations.
• PMP certification.
• Strong project management skills including estimating, cost control, and contract administration.
• Familiarity with CAD systems, digital seal technology, and standard industry design/analysis software.
