Accountability Objective

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of seniors? Our Companions are critical to our communities by supporting people in doing the things that matter most to them while providing a comfortable, safe and nurturing environment. Under the direction of the Life Enrichment Manager, the Companion position is focused on enriching residents lives by ensuring they can make their own choices and lead full lives as independently as they can. Is responsible for supporting residents by providing them with companion services in a dignified and respectful manner, which recognizes their individual needs and preferences and encourages their independence.

Background/Qualifications

  • Minimum of grade 12 education required.
  • Preferably has previous companion experience working with, and supporting seniors.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, in the English language, nurturing excellent human relations with residents, families and other team members.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and meet resident care needs, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Dependable, responsible and an ability to work well with others in a team environment and independently. Demonstrates a positive attitude necessary to meet the goals and standards of the residence.
  • A resident-oriented individual, whose visions and values align with those of the residence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Escorting assigned resident(s) to outside appointments
  • Accompanying residents(s) to group leisure activities, both inside and outside the residence and supporting them as required.
  • Accommodating resident(s) with individual leisure pursuits, such as walks, reading, shopping, attending movies etc.
  • Supports residents’ optimal level of functioning in their activities of daily living while respecting their rights and choices.
  • Spending 'one on one' time with resident(s) in their suite for the purpose of assisting them to reduce anxiety or activities of their choice i.e. correspondence, plant care, leisure activities.
  • Other similar duties as assigned and requested.
  • Completes documentation accurately and legibly according to policies and procedures.
  • Complies with all corporate policies and procedures.
  • Completes all required mandatory training/education.
  • Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System/Globally Harmonized System. This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills. Participates in the ongoing Fire Prevention, and Pest Control programs and any other programs as required.
