YOUR ROLE
Reporting to the Environmental and Technical Manager, the Environmental Superintendent will be responsible for managing environmental compliance for the Mill. The Environmental Assistant Superintendent works with the environmental team and operating groups to continually improve the efficiency and effectiveness of environmental performance through troubleshooting, problem solving, and innovation while promoting excellence in safety and environmental performance.
Your Responsibilities
Process Monitoring
ü Daily monitoring of environmental performance in the mill process areas, including the effluent treatment system to ensure efficient and effective operation. Develop and implement monitoring systems as appropriate. Work with and assist operations with process optimization as it relates to environmental impacts and efficient resource utilization.
ü Function as a resource to operations for the effective troubleshooting of environmental issues - root cause analysis and risk assessment/hazop methodology.
ü Acts as the EMS Lead
Legislative
ü Ensure systems/procedures are in place in compliance with all applicable legislation.
ü Prepare and submit required environmental reports to the regulatory agencies as well as reports required by approvals or other agreements and remediation plans with the authorities.
ü Stay informed of new/upcoming regulations and environmental developments in the pulp and paper industry - ensure site is prepared to meet future requirements and assess suitability for mill application.
ü Responsible for interacting effectively and proactively with the Ministry of the Environment, Environment Canada, and Fisheries Canada.
Environmental Management System
ü Review ongoing sustainability and effectiveness of the mill’s ISO 14001 registered Environmental Management System through routine/regular monitoring of mill environmental performance, audits and management reviews
ü Drive continual improvements, contribute to the development of environmental objectives, plan for achievement, and monitor and report progress
ü Participate in the corrective action processes for audits, incidents, risk assessments, community complaints etc. to ensure follow-up is effective, preventive and sustained
ü Promote a proactive risk-based approach to environmental management
ü Bring new environmental technology to the attention of mill personnel and coordinate the required research and development for implementation at the mill site
ü Responsible for preparing, updating and revising the Environmental Inspection and Test Plans
ü Provide input in the development of environmental operating and capital budgets. Prepare cost justifications for new environmental projects/process changes

Your Qualifications
ü University degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Microbiology or Biochemistry with environmental electives, or Environmental or Chemical Engineering
ü Minimum 4-5 years of environmental experience in an industrial environment preferred
ü Strong computer system aptitude and experience working with various types of software including Microsoft Office Suite; previous experience using [software] is an asset.
