Our team is hiring an IIoT SME to join our growing team to work on one of the most important Canadian airport projects. The successful candidate will lead the design, implementation, and optimization of Industrial Controls and IIoT solutions across operational systems. This role requires deep expertise in IIoT architectures, edge computing, and secure connectivity to drive digital transformation and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate smart technologies into legacy systems while ensuring scalability and cybersecurity.

The project involves technology systems contributing to mission-critical operations and business continuity. This role requires strong communication, technical, project management skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across different teams. This position is based at our Project Office in the west end of Toronto, Ontario requiring the candidate to be in office Monday to Friday weekly.

Your Role Within The Team

  • Technical leadership serving as the technical expert on all IIoT-related matters throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Lead the design of IIoT architecture, including sensors, gateways, networks, and cloud connectivity.
  • Selection of appropriate integration protocols (e.g., Modbus, OPC UA, MQTT, JSON) and hardware/software stacks.
  • Selection of appropriate data transport protocols relative to use cases, class of devices and cost of solution(s) (e.g. 802.11,802.3, LoRaWAN, LTE, 5G, PtP / MESH Radio etc.)Integration of solutions with legacy systems (e.g., SCADA, PLCs, ERP) and modern platforms (e.g., AWS IoT, Azure IoT, PTC ThingWorx, other sensory aggregation platforms.
  • Oversee selection, deployment, and configuration of sensors, actuators, smart controllers, and edge computing devices. Ensure interoperability between different devices and platforms.
  • Support the development of predictive maintenance models, performance optimization, and other analytics-driven use cases.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, environmental, and operational standards. Implement and enforce cybersecurity protocols in line with industry and GTAA IT standards (e.g., ISA/IEC 62443, NIST, ISO 27001), Cyber Security measures (embedded in the design).
  • Produce and maintain system documentation, specifications, and design standards.
  • Accountable for ensuring alignment of designs with the strategic direction of IT and the business units.
  • Collaborates and cultivates effective relationships with key stakeholders to understand and clarify business and technical requirements and facilitate architecture projects and initiatives.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Automation, or a related field.
  • An Engineering Degree (Software/Computer Science, Electrical Engineering) and Professional Engineering designation is an asset.
  • Minimum of 15-years of experience in industrial automation, IoT, or control systems.
  • 10 years experience working in a Class-C Canadian airport environment providing services of similar scope and scale.
  • Experience with cybersecurity frameworks and secure IIoT network design.
  • Proven expertise in: IIoT protocols (MQTT, OPC UA, Modbus, etc.), edge computing platforms (e.g., Siemens, Advantech, Azure IoT Edge), Cloud IoT platforms (e.g., AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub, PTC ThingWorx).
  • Experience in managing technical resources, including, engineers, architects, developers, and/organizations (vendors).
  • Strong understanding of control systems, SCADA, PLCs, and OT/IT convergence.
  • In depth knowledge of Lidar, video analytics, mac /IMEI tracking.
  • Understanding lora wan, PWN, Digital twin, and able to conceptualize sensory design for aggregation and data ingestion.
  • Knowledge of business and technology ecosystems, SaaS (Software as a Service), IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service), SOA (Service Oriented Architecture), APIs (Application Programming Interface), and microservices.
  • Familiarity with system development life cycle management, IT services management, IT infrastructure and operations, and IT Enterprise Architecture frameworks.
  • Comfortable in project management and contract management, applied to management of technology vendors and deliverables in construction industry.
  • Knowledge of Digital /IP CCTV Systems, Maximo, Hexagon CAD, ESB Message Broker Integration Platforms, AI/ML in industrial applications, AutoCAD, Revit.
  • IIoT-related certifications (e.g., Cisco IoT, Microsoft Azure IoT, ISA/IEC 62443).
  • Must be able to obtain and retain a Transportation Security Clearance.
  • Strong understanding of airport and airline business processes.
  • A problem-solver with customer focus, conflict resolution, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively with others.
