The focus of the job is routine cleaning duties, materials management, report minor maintenance to the supervisor and building security to ensure a clean and safe environment for the students, staff and public members at the assigned school or building and facilities. The day-to-day work is done alone after school hours, or under the general direction of the Senior Custodian and performed during shifts where the supervisor is not on-site.

Work is performed within division and department policies and procedures and is guided by maintenance and cleaning standards established by the department. Work is completed in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) regulations and guidelines.

This is a casual position with the possibility of becoming permanent.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Clean and care for buildings and facilities: dry mop tile and concrete floor areas; vacuum carpeted areas; dust furniture, shelves, sanitize desktops, whiteboards, and fixtures as required; wash and disinfect washroom floors, toilets, fixtures and clean mirrors; empty waste baskets, garbage cans and recycling receptacles weighing 10 kg or less – assistance available for heavier lifting if required; clean walls, doors, hardware, glass and damp mop floors at the assigned location; assist with moving furniture during summer cleaning (e.g. stacking chairs using chair lift – job does not climb ladders, do heavy lifting or perform maintenance repairs); other duties as assigned by the supervisor;
    Secure storage areas to ensure cleaning materials and supplies are stored in a safe and orderly manner;
  • Maintain an adequate supply of cleaning materials and supplies; make note of required equipment repairs and report to the supervisor;
  • Maintain current awareness and the ability to access WHMIS information on-line and ensure proper labeling of chemicals and other cleaning products;
  • Advise Head Custodian of building repair and/or maintenance work required;
  • Assist in security activities at the school/facility and surrounding area.


Qualifications:

  • High School/some High School;
  • Knowledge of safety standards and safe use of chemical, tools and equipment acquired through trades related training or on-the-job training;
  • Experience in industrial cleaning methods and products, building maintenance techniques;
  • Knowledge of OHS regulations and of WHMIS principles is an asset – in-house/on-line training is provided;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft programs – Word, Outlook and the Internet is required;
  • Standard First Aid/CPR is an asset;
  • Physically able to complete the duties of the job using appropriate lifting tools and techniques;
  • Ability to schedule and plan task priorities and manage conflicting demands;
  • Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with other workers;

  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with teachers, students, co-workers and the general public.
