Duties and Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain strong and effective relationships with government officials (elected and non-elected).
- Enhance awareness and understanding, through effective advocacy, of the property and casualty insurance industry and the issues that impact insurers and policyholders.
- Develop and implement government relations strategies.
- Assist with the preparation of briefing materials for government and political officials.
- Analyze complex policy issues and prepare analytical and concise summaries.
- Represent association and the P&C insurance industry in government and industry consultations/initiatives/committees and working groups.
- Ensure IBC members are well served by maintaining open communication within the industry at all times.
- Identify risks, opportunities and issues relevant to the business goals and objectives of our member companies and to the customers they serve.
- Leverage a strong understanding of the P&C industry and IBC membership to advance critical public policy goals with the federal government.
- Coordinate internally to appropriately articulate industry positions on a range of subjects.
- Post-Secondary degree in political science, public administration, public policy, economics, or in a related field (Masters degree preferred).
- Minimum 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in government relations, public policy, a government/political office, or an advocacy organization.
- Clear understanding of the P&C insurance industry in the Canadian economy and financial services.
- Clear understanding of government at all levels including an understanding of how government policy is developed and how decisions are made.
- Demonstrated ability to influence, collaborate and negotiate cross functionally in a trade association environment, as well as with external stakeholders and government to achieve results.
- Demonstrated ability in building strategy and to think strategically about complex and multi-faceted issues.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
- Ability to excel working independently and across team environments.
- Proven ability to build consensus.
- Experienced public speaking.
- Experience crafting and delivering presentations to government stakeholders
- Bilingual English/French an asset.
