Legal and Compliance POSITION TYPE: Full-Time Position Available SALARY: $72,233 - $96,738 per annum

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Legal Counsel will provide legal services in a multi-disciplinary, team focused and supportive work environment that values work life balance. This role is critical to providing efficient, effective and timely legal advice. The incumbent will provide legal advice under the direction of General Counsel to RRC Polytech's leaders, working collaboratively to develop legal strategies and solutions, evaluate and minimize risk, draft and develop corporate policies, support legislative compliance, prepare written or verbal opinions. The legal work is varied and may relate to commercial transactions, real property transactions, software licenses, intellectual property protection and licensing, purchase or sale of goods and services, insurance, employment, human rights, conflict resolution, public procurement governance and policies and related matters relevant to a post-secondary educational environment. The Legal Counsel represents RRC Polytech in relation to complaints before regulatory bodies such as the Manitoba Ombudsman, the Human Rights Commission and others. The Legal Counsel builds strong relationships across the Polytech community and must be a trusted resource who provides information and internal training related to relevant legal and policy issues and is a key member of the legal team who must foster and maintain positive relationships with campus and community stakeholders REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (J.D.)
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Manitoba or another Canadian jurisdiction with the ability to become a Member in Manitoba
  • 2-3 years’ experience as a practicing lawyer with a focus on corporate, commercial law. Other areas of focus may be considered
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, including The Human Rights Code, the Workplace Safety and Health Act, The Red River College Polytechnic Act, The Advanced Education Administration Act, The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act among others
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement procedural fairness across a variety of decision-making processes
  • Ability and aptitude for recognizing, investigating, analyzing problems, and for developing innovative solutions to complex situations
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to build trusting relationships and engage various stakeholders
  • Exceptional communication skills, including verbal, written and listening skills including the ability to share legal information and findings of fact with a non-legal audience succinctly
  • Ability to research, develop and present training programs, policies, and best practices
  • Exceptional writing skills are essential including the ability to clearly and concisely provide legal opinions or recommendations in written reports or memos
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
  • Experience building a respectful workplace culture that promotes diversity, learning and continuous improvement
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment or a large and complex organization
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
