FOOD SERVICES COOK - Temporary

Richmond School District operates 38 elementary schools, 10 secondary schools, alternate programs, continuing education and a number of additional facilities. The district enrolls approximately 23,700 students (K-12) and employs over 4000 dedicated staff.

This position provides Food Services and instructional assistance in the preparation of meals within a Teaching Cafeteria. The incumbent assists in the instruction and supervision of students in the preparation, safe handling and correct storage of food. Also demonstrates the safe and proper use of kitchen equipment and appliances. This position is under the supervision of the Administrator and receives instructions from the Teacher.


Major Duties and Responsibilities

Assists Teacher in instructing students in the preparation and safe handling of food. Demonstrates and explains proper food preparation methods and techniques.
    Cooks, bakes and does other food preparation duties to prepare daily breakfast, lunch and catering orders. Demonstrates and supervises the safe and proper use of industrial kitchen equipment and appliances. Assists Teacher in planning menus, preparing recipes and ordering food and supplies for teaching cafeteria and catering. Observes, monitors and documents student progress and reports to Teachers through communication methods such as daily journals, log books, written and verbal reports, and meetings. Works with individuals and small groups, and monitors the classroom as assigned when teacher is briefly absent or unavailable, but does not assume whole class instructional responsibilities. Ensures inventory is used and rotated to ensure food quality. Receives, unpacks and stores kitchen supplies and food as required. Rotates supplies according to kitchen procedures. Sets up kitchen for daily menu preparation and participates in kitchen clean up routines. Ensures Kitchen is locked up at the end of the day. Performs all duties in compliance with District and Government health and safety procedures and regulations that relate to the work performed to minimize potential for accidents, injuries or hazards. Completion of Food Safe Program. Performs other job related duties of comparable importance, difficulty and responsibility as required

Required Qualifications

Grade 12 plus a BC or Interprovincial Certificate of Qualification (T.Q.) and a Certificate of Apprenticeship in the Cooking trade or equivalent apprenticeship training.
    Two (2) years experience at a Journeyman level. The ability to use patience, tolerance and understanding in developing and maintaining a rapport with students and in resolving problems or conflicts that may arise. Strong communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with school staff and to assist students. Skill in the use and operation of industrial kitchen tools, appliances and equipment. Ability to organize workload, work under periodic pressure and complete assignments with minimal supervision
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling and moving materials, equipment and supplies

This position is in the bargaining unit, with an hourly rate of pay of 40.75 plus 4% vacation in lieu of benefits.
