Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will utilize your professional accounting designation and leadership skills in fulfilling the role of financial leadership for a diversified business operation.

What will you do?

  • Provide financial analytics, strategic support and consultative services to branches, facilitating a culture of strong financial governance and stewardship over the operating budget
  • Work with project management teams to facilitate forecast and budget preparation
  • Actively partner with various teams across the organization to assist with ad-hoc reporting, analysis and decision support as required
  • Prepare variance analysis on financial results, including comparisons to budget, projections and historical trends
  • Provide financial analytics, advice and assistance to decision makers and assess documents to ensure that long term business commitments are adhered to
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting for departmental operating expenditures
  • Provide financial support and financial data input relating to business cases for council and committee reports
  • Provide financial analytics expertise for business cases and reports to assist management in the formulation and implementation of the organization’s strategy
  • Consult with department managers to determine financial and accounting requirements and develop necessary financial systems and models to measure results
  • Continuously improve processes and procedures to meet needs of internal clients alongside organizational and technology changes
  • Perform additional duties as required


Qualifications:

  • Related degree from a recognized post secondary institute in Accounting
  • A Professional Accounting Designation (CA, CMA, CGA) is required
  • A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible accounting experience, specifically in planning, budgeting and financial analysis
  • Candidates who do not fully meet these requirements will be considered at the opportunity concept level


Opportunity Concept Level:

  • University degree (Bachelor or Applied) in an accounting related discipline working towards a recognized accounting designation (either eligible or accepted into)
  • One (1) year of progressively responsible full-cycle (month end and year end, accounting, budgeting and variance analysis) accounting experience
  • Or recognized accounting designation (CPA, CMA, CGA, CA) without the requisite year of experience.
  • Incumbents must obtain job level qualifications within five (5) years from positions start date. Incumbents will be required to sign off on Terms and Conditions along with the union, as per the Collective Agreement.


Skills required for success:

  • Possess strong communication skills, verbal and written, to build effective working relationships with business partners and to provide guidance and instruction to peers in the organization
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, requirements and practices
  • A knowledge of the corporate financial system (SAP) and its interrelationship to departmental accounting operations would be an asset
  • Ability to think logically and complete work with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to make decisions and problem solve independently within the scope of the position
  • Strong Google sheets, Excel, Word skills are required
  • Highly developed analytical and conceptual skills for application in a complex financial environment
  • Effective prioritization and organizational skills

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Up to 1 temporary full-time position for up to 11 months

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday

Salary: $41.847 - $52.537 (Hourly)
