About Us
The Office of the Lieutenant Governor/Government House supports the Lieutenant Governor in fulfilling his constitutional, state and ceremonial responsibilities. The Constitution Act 1867, provides that there must be a Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. As the representative of King Charles III, King of Canada, who is Head of State, the Lieutenant Governor is authorized and required to execute all matters that pertain to his office according to law and constitutional convention.
Core Businesses
The Office of the Lieutenant Governor/Government House provides administrative and logistical support enabling the Lieutenant Governor to exercise the constitutional powers and responsibilities of the Office and to undertake representational, ceremonial and civic duties. The autonomous nature of the Office is consistent with the Lieutenant Governor’s role to function with political neutrality. Additionally, the Office is responsible for planning and implementing the Lieutenant Governor’s programme, awards, patronages and many other activities undertaken with, and on behalf of Nova Scotians in communities across the province. The Office works closely with the provincial departments, Government of Canada, Mi’kmaq leaders, Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Halifax Regional Police, Cape Breton Regional Police Service, New Glasgow Regional Police, Department of Canadian Heritage, and numerous non-governmental organizations over which the Lieutenant Governor presides as Patron or Honorary Patron.
About Our Opportunity
The Communications Advisor develops and implements communications strategies and programs for the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. The Communications Advisor is responsible for stakeholder communications and community relations, media relations, issues management, speech writing, video message production, website management, social media postings, photo library management, materials for public announcements and other public documents related to the Office, and manages several of the LGs award programs.
The Communications Advisor works in collaboration with colleagues from the Executive Council Office.
This position reports to the Private Secretary/Executive Director to the Lieutenant Governor.
Primary Accountabilities
Additional duties include:
- Coordinating the Lieutenant Governor’s various award programs,
- Serving as Master of Ceremonies at events
- Organization of some events internal to Government House
- Occasional travel with the Lieutenant Governor to external events
To be successful you have knowledge of the role of the Lieutenant Governor, understand the protocols of working in a fast paced formal environment and enjoy interacting with a diverse cross section of the general public.
You have a University degree in a related discipline and five (5) years of professional communications expertise (or an acceptable equivalent).
You build collaborative working relationships throughout government, with stakeholders, senior officials and the media valuing diversity, equity and inclusion. You can simultaneously manage multiple assignments with conflicting and urgent deadlines, while exercising discretion with sensitive and highly confidential information. You have strong communication skills (both verbal and written), experience in public speaking, and a background in developing and implementing communications strategies. You have experience with website and social media management and exceptional analytical and organizational skills.
Leadership competencies required at this level of work are: Conceptual Thinking, Strategic Orientation, Outcome Focus, Initiative, Effective Interactive Communication, Partnering and Relationship Building, and Intercultural and Diversity Proficiency.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions
Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.
May be required to work overtime on occasion.
Additional Information
This is a Term employment opportunity with an anticipated end date of 2 years from the start date, with the possibility of an extension. The appointment status (‘term’, ‘temporary’ or ‘casual’) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Salary Range: $3,418.96 - $4,273.75 Bi-Weekly
