A Day in the Life:

The Grain Grader main function is quality control and grading of inbound seed and beans and accurately establish grades, weights and dockage on canola and soybean deliveries to Bunge Canada, Hamilton, according to the Regulations and Policies of the Canadian Grain Commission and Bunge Canada.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Grain & Seed Handling and Quality Assessment:

  • Accurately grade and perform dockage assessments on all bean and seed deliveries in a timely fashion.
  • Utilize vacuum probes to obtain representative samples of grain from trucks and report any maintenance needs for probes to the Material Handling Supervisor.
  • Properly prepare samples for third-party grading and retain samples for grade and dockage.
  • Prepare a composite sample of bean and seed received daily and deliver it to the Lab for quality testing.
  • Store all Rail samples for 60 days and Truck samples for 30 days in the sample room, removing older samples as required.

Logistics & Data Management:

  • Accurately input data for truck deliveries into the One-Weigh software system in a timely fashion.
  • Complete paperwork manually when the computer system is not functioning, ensuring accuracy.
  • Complete rail billing on weekends and holidays prior to the rail company's arrival to avoid delayed document and no-bill charges.
  • Complete scale ticket information with destination and load order number for loaded meal hoppers.
  • Process information in the SAP system and manage railcar ordering and release via the CN website.
  • Weigh trucks delivering chemicals and those removing scrap steel and biodegradable materials. Notify the Production Supervisor upon chemical truck arrival for gate opening.
  • Email both the Material Handling Supervisor and the Grain Scheduler with the number of trucks unloaded the previous day.

Site & Equipment Operations:

  • Monitor deliveries and direct trucks to either of the two unloading areas, sending trucks to staging when necessary to prevent congestion.
  • Ensure only 6 trucks are sent to the RTB unloading pit at one time to prevent traffic on Burlington Street.
  • Ensure trucks are unloaded in the same sequence that they were sampled.
  • Check all grain handling equipment and report any deficiencies or concerns (operational, not maintenance).
  • Perform regular scale checks and email results to the supervisor.

Housekeeping & Safety:

  • Maintain the North Property scale house office, the sample room, and surrounding grounds in a neat, clean, and safe working condition.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping of the office, equipment, scale, and sample room, including daily cleaning (counters, sweeping) and weekly tasks (mopping, garbage, bathroom cleaning on Fridays).
  • Report any breach of security to the Material Handling Supervisor.
  • Comply with all Bunge Canada Corporate and Hamilton policies, including Safe Work Practices, Emergency Measures Plan, and the Health and Safety Act of Ontario.
  • Maintain Safety Standards in all areas of work.

General & Support:

  • Provide vacation coverage for the Logistics Coordinator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Material Handling Supervisor

Skills/Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum High School Diploma.
  • 2-3 years of related experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Must successfully complete training to grade grain samples according to the regulations and policies of the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC), and pass associated testing to demonstrate accurate grain grading ability.
  • Must be able to work independently at the north end of the property with minimal supervision, including solving problems that arise during night shifts when direct supervision may not be present.
  • Must present themselves in a respectable manner as a representative of Bunge Canada to all suppliers and truckers, including appropriate appearance, dress, and interaction style.
  • All employees are required to wear clean, company-issued uniforms on each shift.
