Maintenance Technician

Position Summary
Working closely with the Maintenance Coordinators and reporting to the Field Operations Manager, the Maintenance Technician plays a vital role in maintaining the safety, security, and livability of COHO-managed co-operative housing communities. This position ensures that urgent maintenance issues are addressed promptly and professionally, minimizing disruption to residents and protecting property assets.
Working independently and often under pressure, the technician is the first point of contact for emergency maintenance calls. They are responsible for assessing the situation, communicating with residents, and coordinating an appropriate response—either by dispatching trades or attending the site directly. The technician must exercise sound judgment to determine the urgency of each call and take swift, effective action.
The technician must be able to travel to any COHO client site within the Lower Mainland. Travel to Vancouver Island is not required.
The Maintenance Technician is expected to follow COHO’s key management protocols at all times. This includes ensuring that all keys, tools, documents, and any other COHO or co-op property in their care are securely stored and handled in accordance with organizational procedures. Maintaining the integrity and security of client assets is a critical part of this role.
Working Conditions
- The technician must be able to travel to any COHO client site within the Lower Mainland.
- Work may involve exposure to adverse weather, confined spaces, or emergency repair environments.
- The technician must follow COHO’s key management protocols and ensure the security of all tools, documents, and property in their care.
Education, Knowledge and Experience needed:
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of training and relevant work experience;
- Not less than six (6) months of previous maintenance experience;
- Proven experience in building maintenance, emergency response, or a related field;
- Above-average communication skills;
- Above-average knowledge of general maintenance process and methods;
- Strong knowledge of basic building systems (plumbing, electrical, heating, etc.);
- Ability to use troubleshooting logic to trace faults and repair them;
- Must have a secure location to store tools, keys, and COHO/co-op property.
- Must have access to a reliable, insured vehicle at all times to travel to the sites of the co-op building;
- Must possess a Class 5 driver’s license;
- Must possess own basic tools;
- Ability to use mobile devices or apps for reporting and communication is preferred
- Extensive handyperson skills and experience, including but not limited to:
- Basic plumbing & heating, HVAC systems
- Carpentry
- Locks replacement
- Routine electrical repairs

Physical Demands:
- Repeating the same movements.
- Use of hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Moving or lifting miscellaneous equipment including heavy items. Must be able to perform manual labour task – such as lifting and moving materials up to and including 50 lbs.
