Copcan Civil is a leader in civil contracting, construction management, environmental contracting, forestry, demolition, and aggregate sales across British Columbia. Our expertise spans a wide range of services, ensuring we can meet the diverse needs of our clients.

We are looking for a Health & Safety Lead to join us who will be responsible for managing day-to-day operational H&S programs across Copcan for all interior BC Projects. This role will ensure compliance with Copcan and Norland Limited H&S standards, drive proactive risk management, and support frontline teams in creating a safe and productive work environment. The H&S Lead will work closely with site leadership, supervisors, and workers, ensuring a strong H&S presence in the field.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • H&S Operations & Compliance
    • Conduct daily H&S monitoring and field engagement across Copcan Civil.
    • Ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC, and other regulatory bodies.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of H&S procedures, policies, and standards.
    • Maintain and manage digital H&S records, permits, and H&S data in SiteDocs.
  • Risk Management & Auditing
    • Perform routine and scheduled H&S audits, ensuring compliance gaps are addressed.
    • Work with managers and teams to implement corrective actions and prevent recurring issues.
    • Stay updated on industry H&S trends, regulations, and best practices.
  • Contractor H&S Compliance
    • Review the selection, onboarding, and due diligence of contractors for compliance.
    • Conduct periodic contractor H&S reviews and ensure alignment with company policies.
  • H&S Culture, Training & Communication
    • Organize and support H&S meetings, toolbox talks, and employee engagement sessions.
    • Develop and maintain a training matrix to track competency and regulatory training requirements.
    • Promote H&S awareness campaigns and foster a strong H&S culture. Incident Management & Reporting
    • Investigate workplace incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and preventive actions.
    • Ensure accurate and timely reporting to regulatory bodies and senior management.
    • Assist in implementing and monitoring return-to-work and injury management programs.
  • Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee (JHSC).
    • Support JHSC members in conducting regular meetings, workplace inspections, and safety initiatives.
    • Address and escalate safety concerns raised in JHSC meetings, ensuring timely resolution.
    • Ensure JHSC activities align with regulatory requirements and company policies.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • 8+ years of experience in health & safety, with at least 3+ years in a leadership role.
  • Minimum NCSO • Registered Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) would be considered and asset.
  • Working knowledge of OH&S regulations and legislation applicable to BC and/or Canada.
  • Experience using digital safety management systems (e.g., SiteDocs) is an asset.
  • Proficient use of MS Office 365 (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to coach, influence, and collaborate with field crews and supervisors.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and visiting multiple project sites.
  • Strong attention to detail, organized, and committed to documentation and follow-up.
  • Valid and clean BC Driver’s License. • Must be comfortable working in an office and field environment
  • Working to deadlines, some high stress situations and interruptions
  • Travel to various locations in BC. Which may require working outside of normal work hours, to meet the needs of the business
  • Position is Monday to Friday and may involve varying hours of work as required.
  • May be required to work outside of normal work hours on occasion to meet the needs of the business
  • On call for emergencies, as required.
  • Must be able to drive in all weather conditions.

Compensation:

The role is a permanent, full-time position with a typical salary range of $85,000-$115,000 per annum. The starting salary will be based on the successful candidate’s competencies, including but not limited to knowledge, skills, and experience.
