Description

Reporting to the Senior Director, Asset Protection, the Senior Manager, Dangerous Goods position will lead the strategic development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Dangerous Goods program management processes.

The position will provide oversight, strategic guidance, and operational support to National Dangerous Goods elements such as leadership (i.e. goal setting), risk management, communication planning, information management, training and competence, incident investigation, and program monitoring assessment. The position is responsible for stewarding and educating the organization on Dangerous Goods processes to manage compliance with regulatory requirements and management of organizational risk. This position will also work closely with business units, partners, and external vendors having accountability and responsibility for Purolator’s Dangerous Goods program.

This role is responsible for managing one of the single biggest organizational risks in ensuring all planes and vehicles travel safely, by establishing and maintaining requirements and processes necessary to facilitate the safe transport of dangerous goods by the regulatory requirements.

The Dangerous Goods Program is company-wide, applying to all locations, both in Canada and internationally. You will be a part of the business leadership team ensuring operations strategy and execution are aligned to meet the overall business strategy, and people goals and will ensure cross-functional synergies. Responsibilities

  • Developing compliance procedures and standard operating procedures to ensure that the organization is complying with regulatory requirements and operating in a safe environment for employees and equipment
  • Monitoring for regulatory compliance through internal and external auditor and or gap analysis processes
  • Leading root causes assessments of dangerous goods incidents and ensuring business units take remedial action or corrective measures where necessary and required
  • Leading projects
  • Maintain current, in-depth knowledge of TDG Regulations, International regulations, and other applicable regulations and standards and provide recommendations in the interpretation of TDG regulations.
  • Having access to, and a working knowledge of, related environmental, occupational health, safety, and security acts and regulations
  • Recommending the development and implementation of policy and procedures
  • Review and maintenance of Radiation Protection Program
  • Liaising with regulatory agencies, both proactively and reactively
  • Assisting in the selection of 3rd party suppliers, consultants, and vendors; including participation in RFP/RFQ, contract negotiations, SLA, KPI definition
  • Developing, maintaining, and updating training programs, including training records and certificates
  • Acquiring and holding special permits (Equivalency Certificates, Environmental Approvals)
  • Subject matter expert for dangerous goods programs in both Canada and the US. This role will work with stakeholders in almost every business unit to review and recommend existing procedures and policy changes.
  • Full responsibility for budgets, and costs allocated to the DG Program

Education

  • University degree or equivalent work experience

Experience

  • 7-10 years, with 5+ years of that in a leadership position with proven senior level, progressive experience preferably with Strategic oversite of DG process
  • Compliance with DG investigations, conducting customer audits, Managing compliance issues with external stakeholders
  • The ideal candidate will have a track record of success in guiding a team of DG professionals
  • The ability to lead and manage a positive work environment. You’ll need to be able to lead and coach your team to adapt to change, while also thinking critically and creatively to find answers to problems.
  • Ability to recommend immediate corrective actions up to and including work stoppage and/or (e.g., order suspension to TDG activities that pose a threat to workers' health and safety) suspension of customer services (e.g. customer is not complying with DG regulations)
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, delegate, and manage performance.
