Job Summary
Responsible for the management of Short term disability (STD) for all employees who are absent due to illness or injury. Under the STD program, assess medical information to determine level of disability, make entitlement and duration decisions and communicate these decisions to appropriate workplace parties.
Manage employee recovery program and make determinations on ability to return to work (RTW).
Provide guidance to and collaborate with workplace parties and service providers to identify barriers and develop action plans which focus on accommodating the abilities of the employee and what they are capable of doing including appropriate completion dates, milestones and activities required to achieve recovery, successful stay at work (SAW) or timely and safe RTW

Job Summary

Key Accountabilities And Responsibilities
- Applying disability management best practices medically manage absences for WSIB employees who are injured or ill, applying for/on STD including WSIB pending Claims or LTD benefits by:
- Informing workplace parties of their rights and obligations under the STD program
- Collecting and assessing information required from the employee and workplace parties to determine STD eligibility and duration
- Responding to enquiries from management and staff regarding the STD process, entitlement, duration and action plans
- Communicating decisions regarding entitlement, level of disability and estimated duration to employees, workplace parties and service providers both verbally and in writing
- Liaising with workplace parties, service providers, and other resources for input, opinions and assistance in developing early, timely and appropriate actions and interventions required for successful recovery and/or RTW
- Evaluating selected cases to identify best practices and improve future case management activities
- Lead the development and implementation of action plans with management, staff and service providers that include appropriate completion dates, activities and goals required to achieve recovery, and/ or timely and safe return to work (RTW) by:
- Coordinating health recovery, RTW and accommodation plans where timely resolution is expected
- Monitoring progress of all cases and providing workplace parties status updates to ensure goals are met
- Facilitating case conferences with appropriate workplace parties and service providers
- Identifying barriers to RTW and recovery and proactively developing and implementing action plans to address them
- Effectively using appropriate resources (i.e. Work Safe Specialist, Medical Consultant) for assistance when required.
- Providing counsel and support to management and staff by:
- Mediating and attempting to resolve disputes relating to STD entitlement, duration decisions and action plans between employees and workplace parties
- Acting as employer representative in labour relations matters
- Handling requests for reconsideration and if appealed commencing the process to handle objections
- Attending grievance hearings to resolve disputes and issues in the capacity of decision-maker for STD absences.
- Provide input as Subject Matter Expert in the design, development and promotion of the WSIB’s internal disability management program. Educate and inform staff about the HWC’s prevention, disability management and related programs and initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required, such as:
- Providing on-site urgent care and/or Simcoe Place 1st Aid Station backup depending upon appropriate skill set.
- Education (Level and Specialty / Discipline):
- Post-secondary education in a health-related field
- Post-secondary education in disability management an asset
- Experience (Years of Related Experience and Type of Experience):
- 3-5 years in disability management
- Technical or Professional Qualifications or Certifications/Designations:
- License to practice with a regulatory professional college
- CDMP (NIDMAR) is considered an asset
